Very funny Tweet from @edwindrood54 today saying that last night's audience voted Helena and Neville Landless as the LOVERS, thereby taking the whole concept of it being a "family show" into completely unexpected territory! Was anybody from here there? Is there a permutation of the script to cater for this? Did the actors keep straight faces! As the Tweet said.....#awkward
There is a thread trackng these.

This happened often in the original production, as well as in a production I did. Another popular one is Puffer/Deputy, especially if Puffer is over 50 and Deputy is a real teenager.

It happens often in the revival as well, including in the preview I saw. And it's a hoot when it does.

A friend of mine saw this pairing during previews. She said that they played it as the two actors being angry with the audience for being so disgusting. Puffer and Deputy were paired when I saw it, and I could hardly breathe I was laughing so hard. I'm sure it's a very popular outcome.
