Indoor / Outdoor Closing....

Posted: 3/8/06 at 9:57amDuring the curtain call for last night's show, the cast told the audience they had just received the sad news that the show would be closing in 2 weeks if ticket sales didn't increase. It was truly a wonderful show...if you have any interest in seeing it, don't put off getting your tickets. This may be the last shot to catch this wonderful romantic comedy.

That's too bad. I really wanted to see this. I'll have to check it out in the next week or two.
Doesn't seem like anything's having much luck with the Daryl Roth theatres lately. Almost, Maine closed abruptly last month despite being a great show, and the horrid A Woman of Will closed in a week before that. Thom Pain (based on nothing) was their only hit since De La Guarda closed. After the sex harrassment scandal shutdown of Dog Sees God, maybe 15th Street is haunted.
Haha. Just kidding. The Vineyard's never had any problems.
Hopefully Sandra Bernhard can change all that. If not her, then I don't know who.

Why does anyone pour money into commercial Off-Broadway? Possibly just one show has recouped over the last two years--Bug. Even Altar Boyz can't sustain a profit.
When i saw the (relatively) elaborate set for Fanny Hill, i knew the York and partners would lose a lot of money. They have.

Posted: 3/8/06 at 2:32pmAccording to ALTAR BOYZ's producer it perpetually hovers around break even -- earning a few thousand one week and losing a few thousand the next. It has barely paid anything back to its investors so far and likely will never even come close to recouping.

I don't know about slamming the whole Union Square Theatre District. The Vineyard's [title of show] is one of the cleverest and funniest shows in town at the moment (and the Vineyard has given us Avenue Q, Vogel's Long Christmas Ride Home, After Ashley and many other solid plays).
I haven't seen Slava's Snowshow, but Union Square has booked everything from Our Lady of 121st Street, Burn This, Jitney, Laramie Project Wit, and Bat Boy among others.

Even with the tour, it's not likely that Altar Boyz will recoup?
And I don't understand this commercial Off-Broadway stuff. I always felt Off-Broadway was a land for experimental and independent theatre, and that it wasn't the ripest land to make a profit.

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT
I wouldn't call this show the worst show I ever saw, but the middle is ridiculous. However, if you go bring tissues. If you've ever owned a pet; you'll need them.
