Inexpensive NYC Trip Hotel Ideas?

Hello,
I am working on planning an upcoming trip to NYC. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about inexpensive hotels in NYC or in NJ? I had read one post on here a while back about people staying in NJ and taking public transportation into the city. I will be driving my car so parking is also an issue. Really want to be able to spend more money on shows and doing things and not on the hotel. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

1) Do you *HAVE* to bring your car? Because parking is expensive, it is almost certainly cheaper to fly, depending other details, of course.

2) How many people are traveling with you? Any kids?

3) How many nights do you need a room for?

4) How much luggage will you have?

If I know those circumstances, I can tell you your best bet on getting the cheapest travelfare and more spending money for shows.

The travelodge has free parking, I'm sure a few others do as well.

Other than that it will expensive just to park your auto.

inexpensive hotels: the pod on the east side

What I do: seach hotels with expedia...when you find a few with decent rates...go to their website directly and you can OFTEN get a cheaper rate through them directly.

Usually booking directly keeps you from paying for the room right away and makes it easy to cancel so that you can keep looking for a bargain as you get closer to the trip

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Affinia 50, on 50th Street, a few blocks away from Radio City, is not only a great hotel, but extremely cheap.
try there. If you don't plan to use your car, I don't remember parking being much, as we didn't use ours.

Use hotwire or priceline... i went in 2007 and got a room at the Hudson hotel for 120$ a night and this year i am staying at the Sheraton Manhattan at Times Square for like 115$ a night!!

Check www.travelzoo.com for some amazing deals lately. Prices for hotels have plummeted compared to last year. Parking will be expensive though.

Parking in NJ is in general cheaper than NYC but by how much I wouldn't know.

If staying in NJ, stick to hotels in Jersey City and Hoboken for convenient public transportation into NYC by PATH.

Only hotel with free parking in Manhattan is the Travel Inn on West 42nd Street.

I've found some bargains on Priceline.com in the past. Also if you're an AAA member or if you're traveling w/someone 50 or over, some hotels offer a bit of a discount.

For quite a few years, I've gotten some pretty good rates at the Comfort Inn Midtown (especially in the summer--but it's pricey in the fall).

One note about big NYC hotel bargains: Read the fine print about their cancellation polices--some are completely nonrefundable.

The Pod Hotel. I have stayed there twice and absolutely love it. It's so swanky.

I always check sidestep.com and have often found my best deals either on the hotel website, hotels.com or orbitz.com

I most recently reserved the Hotel Chandler for approximately $120/night including taxes.
