So this technology only wirelessly locks your phone? It doesn't block cell service? If so, it seems they've found a legal loophole. I just think it opens up a whole can of worms and will not catch on. Too costly, too burdensome, etc., for theater landlords/owners. There is no way they invest in these.

As I mentioned before on a different board many non-technical people (which would logically encompass people who love the arts) don't know the difference between turning off a cell phone and powering off a cell phone. Powering off means holding the seldom-used on/off button down hard for a long period of time. Try getting a sensitive 80 year old arts lover to do that.
The prohibition is against jamming a cell phone signal by a 3rd party. There is no law against requiring the disabling of that signal by the person with the phone. It is the high tech equivalent of requiring that the phone be checked-something the federal courthouse in Manhattan has done for years.
