Hey all...I'm looking for an internship for this summer (I know this is way in advance but I want to find out what my options are). I'm looking to work backstage at some show doing whatever needed..anything. I've heard that you have to join a union to do this, is this true? Besides, does anyone know how I should go about asking for an internship and if so, which theatres do you think would want/need one? If anyone has any information I would be forever grateful.
Please child, stay away from students live internships. lol

Playbill.com lists some internships on their website under the Jobs section.
The best source for non-acting internships that I've found is a subscription to Artsearch magazine. You can get it through Theater Communications Group www.tcg.org

Who is "students live" and why should I stay away from them?
a broadway education co. I interned there for 4 months last spring. PM me if you want the dirty details:P
Hmm, I also want to have a broadway intern this summer, preferably having to do with accounting (my major). Dunno if there's any such internships though. I was considering interning at students live. What exactly was bad about working there?
I'm not sure how every company works, but for the most part they prefer to take on people who are in their last year (or second to last year) of college, or who they can hire full time if they so desire. While I think getting as much as experience as possible is good, I don't think it fair for someone who just started or is not even in college yet to take internship opportunities away from the people who may need them in order to graduate or get a job soon.
I used to work for a television show that once made the mistake of taking on an intern who was a Senior in Highschool. She thought she was so cool interning there, meanwhile nobody liked it after a while. She was too unexperienced as far as school knowledge, the Producers became irritated with her, and the other interns despised the fact that they had to be on the same level as her.
Just to give you an idea, the place went through 8 interns in a month.
I'm also a business major and wanted to see about internships..anyone know of any summer positions?

The Donmar Warehouse Theatre in London (home in recent years to Nicole Kidman, Gywneth Paltrow, etc) does a year long assistant director internship. Basically they look for someone with a massive interest in directing that they think could be of use to them and to whom they can pass on their expertise for them to start a career in theatre directing. I think more places should do this.
I *am* in college. A sophomore. My honors business teacher is getting me nervous because he keeps saying (over and over again...) that we should have at least two internships in our field before we graduate college. And I'll hopefully be studying abroad next summer, so I figured this summer's the time to get an internship. I don't know if he'd consider a Broadway internship my field, since theatre isn't my major, so I'm hoping that an accounting or bookkeeping internship position will be available...but I've been checking the job postings on playbill.com for months and I've never seen anything for accounting! I'd pretty much take any broadway internship though (theatre's my minor and my obsession), but maybe I should cross students live off my list....
rayoflight104, maybe we'll end up interning together! lol.

NewYorkUniq, what's your name? I volunteered with Students, Live...I was there for the Rent, Chicago, and Def Poetry Jam shows last year. I'm sure I met you!

Forgot to talk about my internship...I interned with the Pete Sanders Group, which represents a bunch of smaller shows and, above all, Chicago. (They are currently doing Wonderful Town.)
There were moments when I couldn't stand it, I admit, but I'd do it all again in a second. It was a really great experience. I got to go to every Broadway event over the summer and stayed with all the press and performers. It was wonderful feeling like I was a part of a scene I love so much :)
The whole "not getting paid" thing sucks, but it was worth it, I believe.
Check playbill.com for internships, TONS are listed. Good luck!
Native NY-er, did you see big problems with Students Live like Newyorkuniq did?

Well, I certainly could NOT agree with you more on that one:) :) :)...that and having kids asked me for my autograph and telling me how great I was outside of the Nederlander! :)
I didn't really HATE Students, Live...they just weren't that nice to us. Most of us were getting up really early to travel and they didn't even act appreciative of that. Just made us stand outside in the cold and rain and hold up signs. Didn't really learn much from that experience. And it was annoying when we did the Chicago workshop, they didn't even have tickets for us for that performance.
telemarketing and more telemarketing...lol I would suggest that everyone search Playbill.com for internships. They have many listed right now. Click on the job listings on the middle left.
Thanks for the info, guys! Hopefully things will work out and I'll be able to get a broadway internship for the summer.
