Posted: 3/3/08 at 7:45pmBernadette only signed to do the show for a few months as a favor to Sondheim and Lapine. She left after, I believe six, months. She was not nominated for a Tony and did not perform.

Posted: 3/3/08 at 7:55pmBy mutual agreement, the WOODS producers submitted Joanna Gleason's name for Best Actress in a musical. She had gotten great reviews and seemed to have a good shot at winning. She did win, and by accident (or design) it was Ms. Peters who was presenting the Best Actress Tony that night.

I thought Peters only remained 3 months with the show.
And I think it was pretty neat that it was her that presented the award to her co-star, Joanna Gleason. Gleason has said that it was a beautiful moment to have the award given to her by Peters and Joel Grey.

Posted: 3/3/08 at 8:43pmWOODS began previews in early October 1987, opening Nov 5th. Peters stayed to the end of March so by my count that's close to 5 months. (Plus she and Gleason returned for a week in May 1989 so it could be taped.)

I don't know why I thought the show had been taped after the show closed.
Were Gleason and Peters the only ones from the original cast that had to return for the taping? Was the rest of the cast still doing the show?

Jesus I'm old... It was just yesterday that I was trying to decide between buying the album or the cassette tape!

I don't know why I thought the show had been taped after the show closed.
No, that was SUNDAY where they went in and taped it in the theatre teh week following the closing. Same with PASSION which was filmed without an audience. WOODS was taped the week of May 23-27, 1989. (Show closed September 3)

At the time of the taping most of the original cast were still in it and most were in it when the show closed. It appears Danielle Ferland also returned for the taping.

INTO THE WOODS was the second OBC that I ONLY bought the CD for (EDWIN DROOD as the first). I think by that time they were finally releasing them simultaneously, so there was no need for the LP.
Though the LP packaging for WOODS was so gorgeous and tempting...

Didn't Pam Winslow have to come back to? I thought Marin Mazzie had already assumed the role of Rapunzel by then.
This is one of the shows that I really want on LP, and I am kicking myself for not buying it when I had the chance.

Well said, ray-andallthatjazz86
I feel the same way.
I also thought it fitting Joanna got to present the revival with their Tony

Yes, Marin Mazzie was Rapunzel for the last couple of months of the run.
Ellen Foley was the Witch, and in front of the theatre was a photo of Mazzie and Foley from the original California production - with Foley's witch in a sort of punk rock wig and costume.
Robert Westenberg and Tom Aldredge had left the show, but came back for the last couple of months.
