What does Cinderella's prince say in Into the Woods near the end of the second act.
It is something along the lines of:
"I was born charming not..."
I just can't remember!

I think it's:
"I was raised to be charming, not sincere."

my favorite is:
"You locked me in a tower for 14 years, and then blinded my prince, and then sent me off to the desert where I bore twins, thanks to you I can never be HAPPY!"
"I was trying to be a good mother!"

oh Into the Woods quotes - what a fabulous time!
one of my favorite parts of the original cast is the look on Joanna Gleason's face when she goes "I've never lied to royalty before" - it's priceless! what a great show!

"If the end is right, it justifies the beans!"
Ah, Joanna Gleason. She was just great in that.

Posted: 5/10/04 at 11:01amseriously, one of the things that has kept me wanting to do theatre through thick and thin is her fabulous performance and the hope that one day i will be lucky enough to do a role like that - she's just great :)

onlylisab - i have to say that although the revival cast was a good one, they just couldn't compare to the original. I mean that first cast would be a pretty hard one to beat and I think that the new cast did a great job, they just seemed to be missing something
show2n - i love that line!! also "excuse me, would you like a blind girl instead?" good times

Posted: 5/11/04 at 12:53pmThis is one of my favorite shows and it's Sondheim at his best. The revival, however, was not up to the original. I didn't care for the reworked lyrics in "The Last Midnight" as it took the bite out of the song. But all in all it's hard to mess up this show. Vanessa Williams was just wrong as the witch.

Posted: 5/11/04 at 1:02pmInto The Woods was the first musical I learned every word to so it really holds a special place for me. While this new production was bright and colorful and fun, it just couldn't compare. Plus, no one can deliver the line "You can talk to birds" like Danielle Ferland.

matt, i dont think anyone can do anything about that role like Danielle Ferland...altho, after seeing her in Camp, i would've LOVED to have seen Anna Kendrick take a crack at it.
As for the revival, I think I'm sorely in the minority, but I really loved it. Loved the design of the show, thought Benanti was jaw-droppingly superb (and friggin robbed of the Tony), I really thought Vanessa Wms was great--can't really tell you why--just loved her...can't really deal with her much on the recording, but live, i thought she was terrific. Hated Adam Wylie & Molly Ephraim. I really liked Kerry O'Malley's performance in it's own right, but it really lacked the edge that Gleason had...Overall, I really loved it, but like many others, I would have preferred to have seen a completely different take on the material...

Posted: 5/11/04 at 2:40pmWell Benanti can do no wrong. She was superb in the show. She was even better in NINE though. The way she sings "Unusual Way" gives me chills. Does anyone know what she's doing next?

Posted: 5/11/04 at 2:52pmI think you're right--Benanti can do no wrong, performance-wise...not sure that I agree that she was better in Nine...i liked her, and they had her dressed exactly like Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys (which made me feel all warm & fuzzy)...she was excellent, but really preferred her in ITW.

Janki - It's "I need that shoe to have a child!" I only remember because Benani's reaction to it was priceless.
Kerry O'Malley was excellent as the Baker's Wife. She certainly gave us a new spin on the character as a younger woman. I disagree with the statement "lacked the edge Gleason had". I believe each performer has a duty to give their own interpretation of the role they are cast in. It's not their job to live up to someone else's.

Posted: 5/11/04 at 10:22pmChiming in with BillFinn, Kerry made a conscious choice not to play Baker's Wife like Joanna Gleason, because she's not at all like her, physically or vocally, and she knows that the role will always BE associated with Joanna. What Kerry gave to the role was an edge all her own--the way she jumped on Gregg Edelman during Any Moment...someone said it best: "Like a dog in heat." LOL! And then there was just the sheer spunk and fieriness of her personality--you could see why her husband followed her. And the fact that she could belt those fabulous notes didn't hurt either...
