So after watching the gorgeous West End revival of Into the Woods, I cant help but wonder why there hasn't been a production at the Delacorte. It would be beyond perfect...especially with a New York inspired setting.
On a side note, I would also love to see Catherine Zeta-Jones as the Witch, Nicole Parker as Baker's Wife, Nikka Graff Lanzarone as Cinderella, and Brian d'Arcy James as Baker. And if they took out the little boy concept, John O'Hurley would be just splendid as Narrator.

Not sure if I like your casting suggestions, but
I think Into the Woods would be fantastic at the Delacorte. I saw Regent's Park production last summer, and as I sat there I wished that New York would get to experience it as well. It was truly magical - and Central Park would be a fantastic setting.

Into the Woods doesn't really fit the Shakespeare in the Park aesthetic. The only non-classical shows they've done in the past few decades are Hair (which has history at The Public), On the Town (which is an older neglected masterpiece), and The Skin of Our Teeth (an American classic).
Producing one of Sondheim's more popular shows just doesn't make sense.

Didn't Drood premiere as part of Shakespeare in the Park in 1985? And where does Mother Courage and Her Children fit into the model, in your opinion?
I think Into the Woods at the Delacorte would be wonderful.

The Pirates of Penzance played the Delacorte then moved to Broadway. Last year, they also did "The Capeman". But I do think a director would have a hard time making a case for producing ITW.

Posted: 5/23/11 at 7:29pmIt wasn't JUST the park setting that made the recent London revival the greatest production of the "Into the Woods" I have EVER seen, it was the concept...for those who haven't seen the complete video online, I won't spoil it for you...but I'm sorta tearing up right now just thinking about it...

Posted: 5/23/11 at 10:13pmI believe Catherine Beta-Jones has been banned from appearing in Sondheim, due to crimes she committed at the Tony Awards against "Send in the Clowns." Sun ban to be in effect for a period of 7-10 years, with time off for good behavior.
