Is Manhattan Concert Productions a Scam?

A friend's daughter submitted an audition for the Jane Eyre Chorus, and was told it's $1,600 to participate and that's outside of lodging, etc. which luckily they don't need. Is this typical for them? 

Any experiences?

I mean, they do actually produce concerts and get big names for them- but demanding anybody pay, let alone that much, to be part of it is insane.
