I think the elements of RENT are far greater than SA, and I don't think anything could top RENT, but I found SA more enjoyable, and I think a lot of it has to do with my age and how I relate more to the story in SA than RENT.
I think it's deemed as the next RENT because of the content and issues that are usually not talked about, RENT shocked audiences with its content ten years ago, and now there's a musical that is again pushing the limits and being even more open than RENT.

I have room in my heart for both Rent and SA, and don't think of them as being in competition. When they arrived, both shows challenged us to think and feel about our lives differently- each has music that reaches deep into our emotions. In multiple viewings of both shows, I've seen audiences from teens to folks in their 80's powerfully moved.
Spring Awakening certainly isn't good, but it's a lot better than Rent, that's all I can say. They are quite different, aside from the rock score.
I think the only reason they are compared is because of their rock scores. They don't really have anything in common besides that.
They're also about young people and deal head-on with issues that involve young people.
I wish Spring Awakening would catch on instead of RENT and High School Musical. I love RENT, but it's gotten far too popular for its own good, and as for HSM... I feel Spring Awakening deals with the problems in education twice as well as HSM.
When was High School Musical even mentioned? It doesn't even compare with either shows.

I dunno--I do see the appeal of comparing shows this way--I love doing that but you have to do it with a grain of salt. In terms of style they're very different too (one is basically sung through the other has the songs almsot take place outside of the action--in which case it has arguably more similarities to Company than Rent *grin*).
People did call Rent "this generation's Hair" and I think are sayign the same about SA and I gues but that they mean a non typical Broadway sound, a bit of a "**** you" atitude (well one that's perceived that way by some anyway) etc...
(I also see a similarity in that many seem to view both as Rock musicals when music wise I see it more as pop :P ) I do love both although I enjoy SA's score more.

Let's not forget that people claimed Bklyn was the "new Rent."
Spring Awakening is the new pain in my ass, for real.
I just feel like I like La Boheme about 1678900 times better than RENT (don't anyone say 525,600 times better..) and I like the original Spring Awakening better. The story of RENT hits home more, you know what I mean? I think Spring Awakening sets kind of a new standard, but RENT is known as a show that revolutionized an entire era of musical theatre. That's hard to live up to.
The first time I saw and heard RENT, it put me in a feeling of awe, and I literally felt different from witnessing it. After seeing and listening to Spring Awakening, I felt almost the exact same feeling of awe and I was blown away by both musicals equally. The stories are very different, but they're both such honest stories with similar impacts on their audience.
But the thing is there are other shows that are honest and compelling. What about Spring Awakening and RENT set them aside? I understand RENT, what with the as-of-then unheard of storylines regarding AIDS and portraying the gay couples that RENT did, but Spring Awakening?

It is my new Rent. I have not seen SA, but I love the score and like Rent, my first exposure was the CD and not the show.

Some Falsetto fans mioght have a boen to kick with you.
I think though the missing ingredient that conencts Rent and SA is their huge appeal to younger theatregoers--for various reasons. That's maybe something some other "honest" shows don't have
