were all the new plays this year outstandingly good?
-Gem of the Ocean
-Democracy
-Brooklyn Boy
-Doubt
-The Pillowman
I was surprised by the wonderful crop of new plays this year (the play revivals paled in comparrison to say the least).
I say they were great, yes.
But I would hardly agree that the revivals paled in comparison
Glengarry Glen Ross, Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe, and Twelve Angry men were magnificent. I really liked the Streetcar revival as well, but I could see objections to it.
I think it was a stellar year for Broadway plays all around!
Theres some tough competition in that category. Its nice to have some actual competition sometimes.
I agree...but honestly, look at the large crop of play revivals and how many can you say were as magnificent as ANY of the new plays. I mean, I know its harder because you have to make the audience feel as if this is the first time theyve ever heard the story (which is obviously easier for a new play) but still. I'd say Glengarry, Virginia Woolf, and Twelve Angry Men were the best revivals *in agreement with penguin* but thats about it.

I think that as a group, the new plays were stronger than the revivals. But that's probably because only the very strongest new plays even manage to make it to Broadway. Revivals with stars are easier to produce, so you get a little more variation in quality.
