I knew from the end titles of THE SINGING DETECTIVE he was accomplished... but this song "Details" on Rosie's blog is unbelievable.
He really should be Guido, but I hope he is Buddy (or Ben?) next year if FOLLIES happens.

Great voice. I've been in love with him for years.
Absolutely - for years I've been hoping he'd find his way to musicals, either on stage or on screen.

Totally cool guy with a really cool, raspy voice. I'm a big fan and would love to see him in a musical...

Follies is being revived next year?
The Aaron Sorkin-scripted film of FOLLIES would presumably be casting around the end of next year were an early 2012 opening indeed planned. I guess it all depends on the project's momentum, which I'm sure will remain as it is until we see how NINE performs (they are both adult, relatively unknown, contemporary showbiz musicals with inherently theatrical surreal elements that may prove difficult to overcome on film).
I hope to see Marshall and Condon re-team, or someone with a vision like Paul Thomas Anderson who is currently working on a new form of musical with RADIOHEAD to be released later this year and has technically already done a musical (MAGNOLIA is based on the ten Aimee Mann songs in the film and they play an integral role in the plot, and, of course, everyone sings "Wise Up" and the music of Jon Brion and Jonny Greenwood is equally integral to BOOGIE NIGHTS and THERE WILL BE BLOOD, respectively).

Oh, I was thinking you meant a stage revival. I haven't heard a word about the Aaron Sorkin-scripted Follies since it was first mentioned.
He really does. I've been saying if Next to Normal was ever made into a movie, he would really make the perfect Dan. He could act that part perectly, and he has the vocal pipes to do it justice. I'd just love to see him in a musical
He's just so... cool
It doesn't sound like he has much of a range, but he certainly does sing with style!
I'd rather see him as Sky than Justing Timberlake!
He has a great voice, but he's still way too young to play Ben or Buddy. He's only 44 or 45, right?
I wouldn't say way too young at all...maybe a bit young, but not way too young.
However, last time the Follies Movie was talked about Vanessa Williams and Nicole Kidman were "unofficially" the popular choices on here for the two female leads. He is easily their contemporary.
Maybe in terms of popular choices, but in the Follies In Concert documentary(ish), Sondheim mentions that because of the concert nature of the piece, they could get away with having some age differences, but in a real production of the show, all four of the leads would be slightly too young. The four leads included George Hearn, then 51, Lee Remick, then 49, and Barbara Cook, then 57.
I'm not saying that the movie leads would actually be cast that old, but for the part the way that it's written, he's too young.
Sally and Phyllis are 49 years old, and that is stated in the book. And I always assumed Ben and Buddy were early 50's.

Scott, I always wondered if Sondheim was saying that to be generous to the women and possibly Hearn as well. The only one who was wildly inappropriate in age in that concert was Patinkin. Like Ljay said, sally and Phyllis are both mentioned as being 49 in the script. Their husbands couldn't/wouldn't be much older, as they were youngsters in law school being shipped off to war in 1941.

I always wondered what he meant by that too!
I agree that I thought that Cook, Hearn and Remick were perfectly fine agewise.
Having no idea John McMartin (late 60's/early 70's?) is but knowing that he was the Original Ben, I would think that he was rather young for the part too.

Actually, Ben's age IS listed in the script (53). And you're right, McMartin was about ten years younger than that when he played Ben.
Wow!! He has an amazing voice.
