potatoe chips help your voice (the oil moisterize and salt strips away bacteria and stuff) and that lemon, honey, and water also help if drunk together like a tea (or lemonade)?
Things like cheese and chocolate cause phlegm or you can get it when you are sick... and you usually know it is there when it gets a little more difficult to reach the higher notes. It's a mucus... and it's also known as "mouth boogers". Some people can actually hock it up... I know that sounds disgusting, but it's a way to get rid of it. I guess it's harder to describe: you probably can feel it inside your throat, but more importantly you can hear it when you are singing [though some people it doesn't affect at all.]
potato chips are ok for your voice but you don't want to eat them right before you sing -you're likely to get little pieces of chip and salt stuck in your throat :0)
I'm telling you, it's all about microwaving coca cola with a wedge of lime until it's not fizzy and acts like a tea -AMAZING.
-Anyone want to turn anarchist with me?"Bless you and all who know you, oh wise and penguined one." ~YouWantItWhen????
Citric acid tends to be good, pineapple juice especially. However, in abundance (like any acid) it becomes corrosive to the lining of the throat. Tea is really good as well as breathing in steam, some people like throat coat tea in particular but that can sometimes be hard to find.
Soda and chocolate are baaaad (especially milk chocolate) as korenglish was saying.
The worst thing to have is a dairy product within about 4 hours before singing.
Of course, water is the best thing for your voice, always make sure that your throat is never dry; when performing I usually have at least 2 water bottles in each wing with a little bit of lemon juice. If you add citrus to your water bottle, remember to shake before drinking so it remains diluted.
I think it's a matter of personal reaction. Everyone for years had told me that dairy was bad to sing on. I never had a problem with it. A lot of singers don't. I just did a production of Sweeney Todd where we all were passing around the cheese wheel. Just next time you eat diary, notice if it effects your phlem production. Personally things like citris dry me out. You can put all sorts of things in liquid, but nothing beats water. If you're sick then you might need something like lots of Vitamin C and slippery elm. It's great but tastes like sauteed crap. I think there's another product that's called singers friend or something like that. I'm not sure I've never used it. any thoughts anyone?
Dairy always gets me. I can't eat or drink any of it before I sing.
One day, I drank a Dr. Pepper right before a voice lesson and I actually sounded better than normal. Diet Soda has the absolute opposite effect on me. It dries me out. I have read that some opera singers take a quick sip of Coke before they sing. It supposedly coats the throat.
The same thing happens when I have a few greasy french fries at lunch before choir. I sound a little bit clearer.
I've read a lot about the subject because I had all the same questions about do's and don'ts for maintaining a healthy voice. Basically what my reading said was drink water and lots of it. If you're going to be performing that night drink over a gallon of water that day. The liquid or any liquid or food for that matter actually never comes in contact with the vocal chords. They are in a separate area of the throat. You must work on keeping your whole body hydrated, this will in turn keep your vocal chords lubricated and healthy. So basically just stick with cool water, that's my rec.
I always add honey to my tea. I've always heard both were good for your voice, so it's like 2 in 1. And adding honey tastes even better than plain sugar.
English Breakfast tea with honey...yum.
Has anyone else tried the "Throat Coat" tea. Nastiest thing in the world, but it does wonders for your voice if you're sick.
Never heard about the potato chips but Lemon's do help a sore throat. One I had a sore throat and when I tried to sing or something I could feel it. I ate a lemon slice and it felt soooo good! It worked like right away!
I heard that throat/cough sweets are bad to suck just before singing as they numb your throat so when your singing you don't realise the damage you are doing to your vocal chords as you can't feel it. If you have throat problems the greatest technique is to 'steam' (head over hot/mentholly water).
I thought that the only thing that numbs your throat in cough drops is menthol, so if you buy them without menthol, then you're fine. Un-mentholated cough drops actually get your saliva working and keep your throat moist.
I think the purpose of menthol is to numb your throat.
Blair, you mention the oily things helping your voice to sound better. I remember on American Idol Season 2 they should this clip of how Trenyce always took a little shot of Olive oil(I believe it was Olive Oil) before she sang and said that it helped her voice.
