Either my audition packet is wrong or I am daft, I did not Gavroche was a Thenardier.

They don't mention it in the play, but in the book he is their son-Eponine's brother.
Edit: Come to think of it I think there was a thread about this before, I'll take a look.
yup in the book, Gavroche is Thenardier's son and I think they have another daughter too, not just Eponine.....
In the play, I thought Gavroche says something about his sister Eponine?

Okay, thanks. It's been a while since I saw the show.
I don't remember this being mentioned in the musical. However, it's made very explicit in the novel.
Damn! Holly Therese beat me to it. Ah, well. You snooze, you lose.
In the musical, Gavroche does point out Eponine, but he never says that she is his sister.
Doesn't she also playfully rustle his hair and flip him the bird ("Look Down")? Later, after Eponine dies, he starts to go after her when they're carrying her away, but someone stops him.
In the novel Gavroche, Eponine, and Azelma are all children of the Thenardiers, along with two nameless boys whom the sell to Marius's grandfather's former maid so that they can replace her two illegitimate children that the grandfather was paying to raise.
Kitzarina, your one-stop shop for all things Les Miz related.
I read the book when Les Mis opened in 1987. It took me about 6 months to finish, but it's amazing how many details (and understandably so) are left out of the musical. The book is excellent, and I highly recommend it.
See, and I'm the geeky kid who finished it in a week in 5th grade.
I had this whole Les Miz fanatic phase...
You think the Shiz Kids/RENTheads/Phans are bad? Honey, I was every bit as scary and annoying.
*sigh* To be 12 again.
Kitz, did you not sleep for that entire week? I think the book was over 1200 pages!!
And don't feel bad, I lived and breathed that show for years (I even worked there and was up for the role of Marius numerous times).
I think I probably skimmed over some of the essays, but it was during Christmas break. Pretty much all I did was read.
I was one of "those" kids.
Nothing wrong with that. I love when I get wrapped up in a book like that. I just can't put it down.

I think any 5th grader who finishes a 1200 page book in a week and lives to tell is WAY more educated than a Renthead, per se. I don't think any Renthead I've ever met has been to the East Village and they are TRULY SCARY and ANNOYING, as you say.
Don't know about the Shizkids or Phans because I haven't met any. I do remember a couple of Sweeney Todd fanatics but they were very cute and sweet.

I tried to read Oliver Twist in 5th grade. It was about 800 pages but I only lasted about 20 pages. Much easier just to watch the movie. Thus began my life of underachievement.
I didn't know he was Eponine's brother either, and I've seen the musical 18 times (so far).......

I've never seen either flip either the bird! But the rest, yes.

The Cliff's Notes is excellent reading as well.
Ah yes, Kitzy remains the woman.
I was also that geek. I also read Les Mis at 12, I wish I had known the musical existed though, my geekdom was such that I would have considered it beneath me to listen to anyway though.
I refused to listen to any music at all back then, and the common act of 'acting' disdainfull.

The interaction between Eponine and Gavroche during "Look Down" does vary. I have seen things from Eponine trying to hit Gavroche with her sack(Rona Figueroa)in a playful and braty way, to sweetly touching his shoulder(Melissa Lyons) when he introduces her.
See, I bought the Cliffs Notes for Les Miz so that I could compare their analysis to my personal analysis. I have also done the same with Jane Eyre. And in both cases, I bought the Spark Notes as well.
It should come to no surprise to anyone that I am an English major
