There was indeed an Irish Mimi-and many other changes to the original 'types' in 'Rent Remixed' there were many reasons that production didn't work, but the race/nationality/accent/whatever of the cast wasn't one of them.
I think producers/casting directors do tend to stick to original cast 'models' unless they are trying to do something different (as above) personally I don't think it's wrong, perhaps a bit lazy but not wrong.

@everythingtaboo >>> Correct. It's lazy, and safe. Its just a shame, as far as Im concerned, that they are not thinking outside the box casting wise.
They know if works and with something like RENT they want to get it on, make some money, and keep it as it is. I think they learnt from the AWFUL London production that if its not broke- don't fix it!

More or less they've always cast Rent this way. And I've always found it to be super ridiculous. Why can't Collins by white? Why can't Mimi be Asian?
The show is supposed to reflect the multicultural reality of New York City. As long as there's a mix I don't see what the problem is.

Posted: 3/14/11 at 12:48pmI've seen a black Mimi (with a white woman playing her mother on the telephone), a black Angel and a white Collins. It had no effect on the text. Like the musical of Two Gentlemen of Verona, the mixed bag of races utilized in the casting was a conscious effort to raise awareness of common human fallacies inherent in all people regardless of race. The actors themselves are representing racial diversity. It was an intentional textural layering of the production.
