God I hope wickedrocks' source is legit. On another note, I heard that Guys and Dolls was set to go into the nederlander next (gag).

Gator , that relationship between Claude and Berger wasn't there in Groff's performance at all. Hanke and Swenson were are more able to convey the love between these two characters. I another thread I said it seemed to me that Hanke seemed more "in his body" where Groff seemed awkward.
I feel also that Hanke better acted the conflict at the card burning Be-in, he didn't just stiffly walk through the directed choreography of indecision. Hanke's performance at that moment had me on the edge of my seat.

Posted: 9/11/08 at 9:52amSNAFU, I have to disagree. I thought that Groff felt much more connected to Swenson. I think they are both talented actors. Does anyone know whether the rest of the cast is expected to transfer? I thought I read somewhere that Patina Renea Miller had other commitments?

Posted: 9/11/08 at 10:01amThrilled this glorious production is transferring to Broadway. Although there's nothing like experiencing it in the park. Thought Hanke was far superior to Groff. Hanke was far more interesting, moving and charismatic in the role. This kid's a star.

Posted: 9/11/08 at 10:47amGavin Creel would make a great Claude...and I hear he's free (sorry Godspell). But reguardless...I loved both Groff and Hanke in the role. I saw it last night and the show gets better and better every time I see it. The performances bring a huge smile to my face. Patina Renea Miller....just wows me every time. I have to admit even though I liked Hanke, I had reservations about him. I thought he was a little too preppy/clean cut, but all that was put to rest last night. His Claude is a little sweeter, but no less powerful than Groff's. My one complaint is that in Flesh Failures, his voice is a little too nasal for me...it needs to more raw and vulnerable like Groff's. My friend Ato is in the show and I'm really excited for him and all the people who will get to make their Broadway debuts with this show. LONG LIVE HAIR!

I don't know why, but I think that Neil Patrick Harris (if he were a bit younger, even though he still has that baby face) could('ve) be(en) a great Claude.
Regardless, since I probably won't get to see it again this week like I want to, I'm glad it's transferring so I can see it once more. It won't have the same ambiance as the park, though.

"I hope they're looking at the Circle in the Square. I think it'd be perfect there."
That was the first place to spring to mind for me, as well. ....I thought rumor was it was going to open at Broadhurst after Equus?

The Broadhurst is committed to Mary Stuart after Equus closes.
I did not have the good luck to see it at the Delacorte, much to my regret and dismay. One of the things about which everyone commented was how great it was in a outdoors venue. I hope the joy of the show will transfer to an indoor house, whatever that may end up being. I saw the original in '68 and loved it, but I would have liked to seen it in the open-air setting. Still looking forward to it.

Posted: 9/11/08 at 11:47amMy source is highly reliable. Someone directly involved with the show's transfer. Their number one choice, and very possible home, is the Nederlander.

The Nederlander is a good choice, but will they at least vacuum and dust and maybe touch up the paint first?
Rewiring would be great but there may not be enough time.

Hair is actually a GREAT choice for the Nederlander, and I'll be very happy if that's true :) I think it's very fitting on a sentimental level, considering shows like Hair led the way for a show like RENT.
That said I really don't know if i'm ready to step foot in the Nederlander anytime soon with it not being RENT, which could be a problem since I REALLY want to see Hair.. haha. Well, if it DOES move there I'll just have to suck it up and go.
and
Dear Groff,
pleeeeeeeeease be in the show <3 I mean, I'd prob see it either way just because it seems like one of those shows I SHOULD see, but it would really make me happy to see you do it

broadwaybaby086,
Maybe because Hanke recalls NPH in appearance and in action? When I saw Hanke in RENT for the first time I couldn't even get over how much he reminded me of NPH.

wickedrocks...I hope you are right. I would pee my proverbial pants if hair was put in the neder--especially with Hanke starring! Even as an intensly depressed Rent fan who is unwilling to set eyes on the neder missing its rent marquee, i would go see hair there in an INSTANT! Would they do sone sort of ticket lotto or rush?
I'm so sad I'm moving to London for graduate school for a year, This will definitely be worth a trip back home (provided it coincides with christmas vacation or the likes...)

I'm really excited. If it's early 2009 then I might get a chance to see it!!
Hurry up and announce the dates and cast!

Good. Now they can do these things:
- Re-cast the majority who were sleep-walking through the show. They've all got to look like they're living it, like they're in the moment, not phoning it in with whatever they saw the last time they watched Woodstock.
- Re-design some of the costumes to be less extreme "K Mart costume hippie" with all the dressy turtle necks and Nehru jackets and more authentic (let's see more beads/medallions/headbands on everyone, bell-bottom jeans/vests/tennis shoes/sandals/jean jackets/military jackets/"Sgt. Pepper" style band jackets on men, full length skirts/peasant blouses/bell-bottom jeans/vests/halter tops on women).
These kids are a tribe of street urchins; they don't have money and they're almost always seen outside in the context of the show's script, so dressier fashions of the time (as currently seen) are inappropriate. "Anti-fashion" is a good concept to keep in mind. Colors, textures, and patterns are butted up against each other in ways that were considered bad taste before the hippie era. To purposely flaunt their eclectic ideas of dress is one of the keys to the look.
- Bring in (for the most part, aside from some songs not covered in it) Seth Rudetsky's arrangements from the Actor's Fund benefit, which are funkier and more in line with what Galt MacDermot has had in mind when he hears the score in his head.
Do all this, and it should be fine. At this point, since Groff is basically the only thing making this transfer possible, I'm willing to swallow that difficult pill of his casting.

SNAFU- Agreed. Hanke's wig was better. I still hope Groff transfers.
gvendo2005- Just curious, who did you feel was sleep-walking through the show? I never felt that way and I've seen it a few times.

Posted: 9/11/08 at 2:45pmThey waited to make the announcement to settle things out with Groff who's apparently shooting somewhere...so they wanted to make sure he would do it. So bet on him moving with the show. It's a very safe bet.

I don't really have a problem with the current costumes. I think they're pretty authentic and thankfully tie dye clothing is not running rampant. Most of your "requests" are in the show. Saycon wears a full length skirt, Nicole wears peasant blouses, and a few of the girls in the tribe wear bell botoms as well as a few of the boys wearing military jackets and jean jackets.
I hope Hanke does transfer as well, at least in a stand-by capacity. I don't feel he's a good fit to cover Berger as has been rumored but I wish Theo Stockman could cover Claude as well.

^YAY to that!
and I agree... it seems like if they weren't highly anticipating Groff moving with the show, they just would make the announcment that he ISN'T doing it at this point.
They could always change his wig for Broadway. You know, make it better :P

Posted: 9/11/08 at 4:21pmJeez, Groff's cherubic good looks are still convincing people that he's a capable actor? I thought we'd settled this debate months ago...
