So I thought I'd thread jack and post about the current tour.
I saw it in San Francisco and thought it was pretty bad. Corey Glover was all over the place and didn't really sing, more like screaming. I saw Ted Neeley's u/s and he was good. I thought the show was going to be ok, but I didn't enjoy it. The only person I really liked was Craig Sculli as Pilate.
I just saw the show this weekend I have to say that it has gotten ten times better. The cast sounded great together and the two new members were much better. Corey Glover actually shocked me that he actually could sing, I must have sing him sick the first time. I saw Ted Neeley this time and I have to say I was impressed for a man his age to be able to sing some crazy notes. I felt that the tour did a 180 turn and has finally pulled it together and is doing a great job. I actually want to see it again, which is completely the opposite of how I felt when I saw it the first time.
BTW, does anyone know if Ted Neeley will be continuing into 2008 since they are scheduled for San Diego and it's the Farewell tour?

Ack. I know this thread was started a couple months ago so anything I might be able to add was probably already said - but all those block paragraphs! I had to scroll past just to retain my sanity.
If you don't own any other cast recordings of JCS start out with the original double-album concept recording.
If that leaves you wanting more I suggest moving through the cast recordings chronologically. JCS was ground-breaking in its day, and then eventually moved into "a selection of your lite-rock favorites" as time moved on. I don't think there is any one definitive JCS recording - they all have their strengths and weaknesses.
If you really want to hear a dichotomy of recordings check out the 2000 London revival cast with Paul Nicholson and Claire Moore followed by Jesus Christ Superstar - A Resurrection featuring the Indigo Girls and other Atlanta musicians. They couldn't be more different but each in their own way highlight the best and the worst of the score.
