They would have to find an equally notable name to play Edna opposite his wilbur (if he was indeed wilbur.)
we will see. Where did you find out Lisa? any word on which role?

I know who he is!
It's Beaver Cleaver!
As Edna?
Scary.
I think he'd do better as Wilbur.

God I love Leave it to Beaver.
Wally was so cute in the later seasons.

Thank you Jon...I never thought much of him as a child actor and he is absolutely godawful as an adult.
I mean, nostalgia can only take you so far...this is absolute BS.
Don't do this to a show I love!
re: JERRY MATHERS IN HAIRSPRAY#19
Posted: 5/9/07 at 11:04amI think Wilbur is such a cop out role for celbrities/former celebrities to play. If you're going to make a splash in HAIRSPRAY, go overboard and play Edna! There's nothing to do in the role of Wilbur.

Now, a tourist can take a snap with a cell phone and go home with a Beaver Shot.
Sidebar -- what gay man over 50 didn't know he was ThatWay watching Wally? Does anyone remember him guesting on a DR. KILDARE a couple of years later, where he got a girl pregnant? I have a friend in SF who cannot talk about how he pictured the teen Tony Dow getting laid in a car without swooning. Swooning, the only word. The conception wasn't shown of course, or Mr. Chamberlin would've swooned to. He was also in a dreadful scifi movie called SPACE CHILDREN. Ah, the 50s.

Yeah...that's what Jerry Mathers did. He actually got the script for each and every Broadway show and said..."Which role is the biggest cop out that I can play?...Wilbur in Hairspray."
Maybe...just MAYBE...that's the role he was offered.
And if YOU were offered a role on Broadway are you saying you would turn it down because it had "nothing to do"?

I love it!
As an 50's era immigrant kid growing up in an ethnic ghetto, the Beaver was my role model on how to be a middle class all-American guy.
And here I am!
Can't wait to see him dancing to "Timeless To Me".

This scares me. As cute as he was a kid, Mathers is a horrible adult actor. Wilbur is nothing but one-liners and reactions...without an (at least) experienced character actor, it doesn't seem like the character would be very successful. But, I'm sure he'll bring in the tourists.
...and Tony Dow...SWOOOOOON.

Wilbur is a great part--at least it was when I saw De Rosa do it--he was great!
Of course if Tony Dow was doing the show, I'd be there in a heartbeat...that's a hot pic jim, but I liked him when he was more feathered in the earlier seasons...Wally's a dreamboat....
