JUNO, The Invited Dress

Posted: 3/28/08 at 4:43pmIt's always odd that the NY Times Encores! reviews come out on Saturday since there's only 3 performances left. I think they should come out on Thursday night.

BRANTLEY: "That [Clark] is never given the chance to soar in song may be in keeping with Blitzstein’s intentions, but, oh, it does frustrate."
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!
BRANTLEY: "But the comic numbers, meant to express the Irish love of hyperbole, fall flat here, transforming hypnotic blarney into farcical bluster."
I AGREE WITH THE MAN, AGAIN!
BRANTLEY: "Normally such [dance] sequences are called dream ballets. This one qualifies memorably as the stuff of nightmares."
MY WORDS! Haha... all right I've convinced myself that The Times Man read my thoughts on the invited-dress before writing his review!

Posted: 3/29/08 at 10:45amRay, the logistics of a critic attending the regular performance on Thursday night (which began at eight), getting out after ten, writing an entire review, submitting it for editing, revising it and then resubmitting it for publication in the span of 2-3 hours is, frankly, impossible. They could have it published online by mid-Friday, but there's no way it could actually get into a print edition before Saturday.

Posted: 3/29/08 at 2:22pmI forgot that the review couldn't come out on Thursday since well, the critics don't see the show till Thursday night, hehe. Slightly miscalculation there, thanks for clarifying that, AC.

Back in the day, critics attended opening nights and wrote the review for that nights publication. Many times dictated over the phone to the editor.
Now they have days to write one. (With the exception of Encores! where they have at least a day to write it...)
