I remember thinking that Jack Black would be a great Freddy when the show first opened and the discussion was about who could take it on the road. I have no doubt that he could sing the part competently and have just as much fun with that role as Butz does. I think, to be honest, he would be a slight step down from what Butz has already done with the role, but he would probably be as good as anyone else they might find, established or not.
Now why would he do it, given the way his film career is currently going? I think there are a couple of reasons.
First, remember his interview just a few days ago in which he lost his train of thought because he was so excited about going to see Sweeney Todd that night? The man loves the theater. I have no doubt that given the right role and the right timing he would love to do it.
Second, there is the opportunity to prove to himself, his fans, and his critics that he's got the chops for it. I recall Jerry Lewis stating that he never felt like he had arrived as a performer until he headlined Damn Yankees. A lot of stars would like to prove their legitimacy on the Broadway stage. And given that Black is a fan of live theatre, I suspect this desire is even stronger in him.
Finally, it's not as if he would be abandoning his film career and sinking into a line of work without recognition. If nothing else, there is now the allure of a Tony Award for replacement performers. As great as Jack Black is, I don't see an Oscar in his future -- but a Tony? Maybe, just maybe. And that's hard to turn down if the timing is right.
