That said, I think the double applause still happened in the original production, right? If the soundboard recording is any guide, the actresses still got a hand upon their first entrance and then again during Beautiful Girls, correct?

I don't remember all the GIRLS getting entrance applause, Collins and Smith may have gotten some, but remember they were not big stars at the time and their carreers were from different eras. except for Sally and Phyliss, you really didn't notice the other GIRLS, as they entered as a group.
(The guests arrive. The stage is suddenly filled with color and energy, as couple after couple, ranging in age from their fifties to their eighties, move about excitedly. They make their way downstage, past ghost showgirls, to the waitress with the sashes. She presents a sash to each lady, who moves with it to the wings as husbands and escorts mill about.)
And there was no stairway, Aronsons moving platforms creates a series of cascading ramps and as PJ stated, the number was of a whole. BEAUTIFUL GIRLS seemed to come much quicker. I believe the idea of a grand stairway and applause for each Girl started with the Lincoln Center concert which had Stars in every role, and this was the first time in the evening we saw them. That was a night!!!
