I'm curious about these as I do not know their history. Who founded them and when? How prestigious are they in the theatre world?

They've been around since the late 1960's. They really don't carry that much weight. In the 1970's, they actually used to televise the awards ceremony.

At the time there were only the Jeff "Awards" - for Equity theatres. Now they also have the Jeff "Citations" for non-union productions. With the "citations, they can nominate as many people as they want, and give out mul;tiple awards in one category. You might have 4 actors win "Best Actor" in a category with 12 nominees. It all becomes rather meaningless.

Meaningless, maybe - but it's always included in an actor's bio. Unless they have so many it looks silly, like Laurie Metcalf.

Hmmm, well, that's kind of a bummer.
