Too old? Stephanie J. Block, Ana Gasteyer?
Starship, as much as I love Stephanie, I think her Wicked time is far past over. I saw her on tour as Elphaba. She was great, I just don't think she would be good reprising the role in the movie. And to everyone who says Sutton just doesn't have the lungs for this role, I guess you're kind of right. Ever since I saw her in SHREK I've been obsessed with her. I saw her 8 times in ANYTHING GOES. At this point, I kind of think she would be good in any role.

I'm pretty sure Wicked is too good a show for Sutton. She likes to reserve her talent for the absolute worst shows she can get cast in. And she is definitely too old. As for Jennifer, her voice is (obviously) too low. How is this even being considered?
"and just how did DIANNA ROSS do in THE WIZ?...not very good...get my point?"
Your point couldn't be clearer.
You mean that since they cast The Wiz movie the same ethnic way it was originally cast on Broadway and it wasn't a success (in your opinion), that they shouldn't repeat the same mistake and cast the Wicked movie the same ethnic way it was originally cast on Broadway.
Accordingly, you think Hudson would be the perfect movie Elphaba.
Right?
The part's already been given to Katie Holmes.
Here's her audition tape. She totally stole this audition song from Lea Michele.

Quiche I think you misunderstood what I was saying. Someone mentioned Jennifer would be too old so I was referring to the ages Stephanie and Ana were when they played Elphaba. I was not at all suggesting Elphaba be played by either women in the movie version.
I'm 99.9% sure Elphaba will be a star name in the film adaptation.

The Wiz was making a racial statement, Wicked is not and should be left colorblind. Anything else is positively bigoted.

Just for fun...what Jennifer Hudson might look like green.
Samantha Barks sounds good singing Defying Gravity here.

Really? I agree that SHREK was pretty bad. The only reason I enjoyed it was because of Sutton. But the 8 times I saw ANYTHING GOES were all fabulous. It wasn't just Sutton that kept me coming back, it was also partly the show that I loved. I loved the movie version too.

this is off topic, but I personally can't stomach shows like Anything Goes. So that wouldn't have won me over.
You wait'll Zooey Deschanel gets cast as Galinda.
PositivelyEmerald, did you PhotoShop that? It looks really good.
I don't think The Wiz was making a racial statement at all. It was just a "soul Wizard of Oz," and since soul music was predominantly black, the cast was predominantly black. There have been multicultural productions ever since which don't dilute the show at all.
TheHappyPhantom, I honestly don't know how anyone can dislike ANYTHING GOES. But, I guess we are all entitled to our opinions. When I saw it for my 3rd time I brought my girlfriend with me and she hated it. I don't get why she hates it, but she does. Oh well.

I don't like shows that are peppy, sappy, happy, and have no brains or statement.
And I agree that you can diversify the Wiz and not hurt the story. I was saying the original casting, at that time, was making a statement.

Sutton has a very distinct voice, so i think Elphaba is within her range her voice just wouldn't sound right for the role, although her acting would be fabulous as Elphaba.
Any chance of Idina/Kristin reprising their roles? Then casting a big name as the Wizard/Morrible/Fiyero (PLEASE NOT NICK JONAS)to attract a mainstream audience as well as the Rentheads and Die hard wicked fans
^^ Idina and Kristin have already stated that they would NOT be willing to reprise their roles for the movie or stage ever again.
well thats my idea shot out the water then!
I hope they dont feel the need to Stunt cast Elphaba/Glinda and pull on the fantastic actresses who have ever played the roles on Broaday/Westend/Worldwide

Bob, me either. But, this is a movie and it needs to pull more than just the Broadway crowd. I do have to say that I'm confident they'll choose someone talented enough to pull off both characters. I know plenty of actresses and actors who could make the movie FANTASTIC that aren't in the Broadway pool.
Hudson is a WRETCHED actress. Horrifyingly bad. Her Oscar performance was crafted by the director of Dreamgirls giving her line readings and holding her hand. Beyonce deserved the Oscar for her transformation into Deena.
This movie will be cast by who is HOT at the moment in the tween camps. They may even look for unknowns and fill the supporting cast with hot names.
Sutton's Life at the Carlyle CD has her singing Defying Gravity. And even though Sutton can do no wrong in my eyes (I'm obsessed with Bunheads!) I don't think it's the right fit for her at all. She's sort of in on her own joke by throwing it into her concert series and making unexpected comedic choices.
I can't say I'd be surprised in the least if it went to Lea Michele, in all seriousness.
Bettyboy, you are absoultley right. They will find unknown actors to fill main roles, then roles like Boq and Nessa are gonna be the huge names.
Too old for a movie is completely different to bring on stage. They need to be in early twenties to play convincingly on film. Idina, Kristin, Staphanie etc would look ridiculous trying to play college age on film
I will never understand why people on these boards constantly suggest Broadway stars for major musical movie roles.
