Performing from Hairspray. Just a reminder.

"Zac is sweet as can be. He's very much just a sweet kid from California who happens to have a face that looks like it was drawn by Michelangelo, (if Michelangelo did anime)."
-Adam Shankman.

"I haven't left this building since Windows 3.1!"

"Celebrating a birthday this week: Rene Descartes is 412! Do you know who he is? Then why are you watching this show? You could probably get into college and even get one of those job things. As for the rest of us; Amanda Bynes is 22! Yay!"

One of the more bizarre performances....

See, what was so great about Harvey Fierstein was that he WAS Edna. He didn't do it as a guy in drag.

I can't say the same for Paul Vogt, after seeing this TV spot.

Beav was good.

Honestly, he looked like a third-rate high school actor.

Here's a review from Momma Calvin, just sent to me via email:

I was watching Regis this morning and they had Jerry Mathers (the Beaver) on. He is in "Hairspray" on Broadway. That would be a show to miss. He can't sing and was hammy acting. They must be desperate for the husband part in that play. They said ticket sales went up when he started but after seeing him, they'll take a dip. They need to stick with Broadway actors and forget those "name" draws!

I have seen Paul both at NSMT and on Broadway... he was ANYTHING but just a guy in drag. He really gives the performance a wonderful feminine/motherly touch that you do forget you are watching a man.

Here are some of his notices when he did the show at NSMT.

THE BOSTON GLOBE
One of the main characters is performed in drag: Tracy's oversize and borderline housebound mother, Edna, played grandly by Paul C. Vogt . Vogt is a "MADtv" alum, and his comic chops shine throughout, especially with the able aid of stage veteran Dick Decareau , who plays Edna's ever-devoted jokester husband, Wilbur.

THE BOSTON HERALD
Paul C. Vogt in the cross-dressing role of Tracy’s mom, Edna, calls on his ‘‘MadTV” background for some very funny stage business, and he and Dick Decareau make a charming couple in the scene-stealing ‘‘Timeless to Me.”

BROADWAY WORLD
It’s Paul C. Vogt in drag as the beloved, big-busted Edna, though, who owns and ignites this “Hairspray.” His performance – comic, vulnerable, unrepressed, and exquisitely timed – is quite simply divine (yes, that nod to the original was intentional). Self-conscious when faced with appearing in public but fiercely maternal when protecting Tracy, Vogt manages to do the impossible. He makes us believe he’s a woman. Dick Decareau as Edna’s husband Wilbur ably reinforces the charade. He gives us a man who’s head over heels in love – passionate, supportive, and still lustful after all these years. Their delightful and endearing 11th hour duet, “Timeless to Me,” is a bona fide showstopper. Words can’t describe how funny their vaudeville style adlibs are as these two old smoothies smile and soft shoe their way across the stage.

IN NEWSWEEKLY
The weighty welcome to the '60s truly takes hold when Tracy's mama, Edna Turnblad, played big and brilliant by Paul C. Vogt (MADtv), undergoes a hefty makeover and simply steals the show.

EDGEboston
Under Ivan’s sure hand, this Hairspray never lets up, save for a wonderfully calibrated soft shoe number between Tracy’s parents, Edna and Wilbur. The song - Timeless to Me - is an old-fashioned charmer that Paul Vogt (as Edna) and Dick Decareau (as Wilbur) build to a slyly timed comic finish. Vogt has a droll comic delivery that often wisely evokes Divine, the film’s Edna; and his facial expressions and basso vocal delivery are priceless.

COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER COMPANY
Paul C. Vogt is a stunner as Tracy's boxcar-sized mom Edna Turnblad, and his impeccable comedy timing on double takes and dramatic pauses is not lost on the audience. In an evening full of showstoppers and scene-stealers, Vogt's hilarious nostalgic soft-shoe duet "Timeless to Me," with the gifted Dick Decareau as husband Wilbur Turnblad, threatens to run off with the evening as the audience goes nuts over it.

THE DAILY ITEM
Surely Bridie Carroll as Tracy Turnblad – the girl with big hair and even bigger dreams – was a standout, as was Paul C. Vogt as her overweight but spirited mother, Edna. On stage, whether in a scene together or apart, they were electric. The high points of this production were so frequent that the audience simply broke into cheers and applause at every turn, causing the actors to pause and regain their composure. Such moments included a schmaltzy but touching duet by Edna Turnblad and her novelty shop owner husband, Wilbur, played by Dick Decareau. It was so well received, the pair actually chuckled and seemingly ad-libbed, unveiling the joy of live theater.

THE BOSTON CITY PAPER
However, the show becomes, well, er, larger- than-life, shall we say, when Tracy's cautious yet well meaning mom, Edna, played by Paul C. Vogt come on stage. Vogt is excellent as Edna.

I thought Paul was horrible. I saw him in MA and was bored to tears by his performance. He didn't even seem to be trying. Of all the Endas I've seen, I'd say only Harvey and Bruce really worked at making you forget that you were watching an actor, and became Edna Turnblad.
