So interesting that Loudon was only 46 when she did this. I think of her as being much older. She looked great, quite beautiful in fact, and exquisite on stage, but in a very different,more mature way than women who are 46 generally look now, let alone women in show business. I can't really think of anyone in their 40s in the business who has that kind of soft, mature, womanly look.

I agree henrikegerman is exactly right: 50 is the new 40 and 40 is the new 30. Only the most neurotically insecure think they are "washed up" at 50.
It might make a lot more sense to cast a Laine Kazan or a Tyne Daly and make the character 60.
