Jersey Boys is coming to town. Can I bring my 10-year-old twins? They have seen lots of theatre, both professional and amateur. I've seen one warning that says "not appropriate for children 13 and under", and another that says "not appropriate for children 7 and under". What exactly is not appropriate in the show? Language? Content? Sexual references? How inappropriate is it?
They swear a few times, and there's a whole song about sex (Oh What A Night) but I think they'd be fine with the show. I really don't think it's very inappropriate at all.

I think the frequent use of the "f" word is what probably got Jersey Boys those warnings. There's one sexual situation too.
If it was a movie...it would probably get an PG-13 or R rating.

Gotta say, I LOVE this show, my kids and I sing the songs all the time, they have watched the video previews, but I tell them that's all they see for now - Just because they drop the "F" bomb so frequently... The "sex" scene not so worried about, its no worse then anything they see on TV... So we joke that when they are old enough, hopefully there will be a terrific revival they can see! :)
(My kids are 8 & 10 - and yes they are well versed in the theatre... professional and otherwise)
Hope that helps!
The language is at times just a few "f" bombs shy of THE SOPRANOS. The show doesn't contain any nudity, so the 'realistic' language is debatable for the young ones. One on my nephews who is 9 years old has seen the show 3 times, and the language didn't make one impression on him at all. It wasn't a big deal for him.
Now...A CHORUS LINE did produce a few questions, but they weren't about the sexuality aspects of the show. Interesting.

If this show was a movie it'd definatly be R. The use of the f word alone would but it over the top.
Thanks everyone.
They can probable handle the "F" bomb (they know its a bad word, no idea what it means), but can anyone give me some specifics about the "sexual situation" in the show?
Bob Gaudio loses his virginity and there's a big deal made about it. Plus, two of the other guys do a play-by-play, but the sex is offstage.

You don't see anything on stage. From what i remember, "Bob Gaudio" is sitting on a couch with the girl next to him while he's singing, then they go downstairs (offstage). It's really not inappropriate
Yeah, but there is the whole "Splashdown! Splashdown!" dirty talk from Tommy DeVito.
The girls are also wearing revealing lingerie..and they pass a joint which they each take of hit of. The girl who has sex with Bob Gaudio kisses him and he blows the smoke out of his mouth. With the exception of the F-bombs its really nothing you haven't seen on regular TV.

It's definitely no more than a PG-13.

The whole play by play that Tommy and Nick do while Bob is having sex was something like "All systems are go. Contact, we have contact. Splashdown, we have splashdown." There is more but I can't remember it right now.
There is a sign outside the box office that is like the warning with what to expect. It was basically "Jersey Boys imploys strobe lights, gun effects, and AUTHENTIC PROFANE JERSEY VOCABULARY". I'm not kidding about that last part, that is litterally what it looks like on the sign(that why I capitalized every letter of the last part) except that it's also in bold print.
I do believe have seen young kids when I've gone to see Jersey Boys there watching the show. There are young kids, ten and probably a little under who have seen the show, so I think it'll be fine to take your kids to.
The sign is also up at the Curran, although it's not very prominent, and the night I went, some people expressed initial surprise at the f-bombs, but then came to their senses when they considered the source material and all.
They go "downstairs"?
That sounds dirty.
Well, on tour it's upstairs, so...

So, in the Broadway show they go down stairs like going to the basement or do a room on the first floor and on tour, they go upstairs to like the upstairs bedroom. That's interesting, well I do remember hearing from Des that the tour was going to be different from the NY show and from what I've seen it is. I saw a video of the tour doing Who Loves You, and they brought the screens down and they had like weird designs on it.
I've seen the Broadway show 3 times and the tour once. The only difference regarding the staging that I can recall is the fact they go upstairs instead of downstairs in the Oh What a Night scene.
the swearing done in italian is far more entertaining than all the f bombs.
