"Jersey Boys, the Tony Award-winning musical that tells the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, has set a new house record at the August Wilson Theatre for the second week in a row, grossing $1,104,169.00 for the week ending August 13, 2006. The show also had the highest seating capacity of any show on Broadway: 100.5%."
Take that, WICKED!
There are no standing room tickets for the Gerswhin where WICKED plays. It can only play 100%, which it has played consistently almost since it first opened, with a couple of exceptions now and then.
WICKED still grossed $300,000 more than JERSEY BOYS. Although the show is outselling WICKED, seat by seat, WICKED still grosses higher and packs its theatre weekly.
One could argue that the Gerswhin barn is much larger than the August Wilson, but also keep in mind that WICKED did not win the Tony Award for Best Musical, nor did not open less than a year ago.
While the box office performance of JERSEY BOYS is nothing short of spectacular, WICKED is still the number one show on Broadway.
Not by quality.
Way to go Jersey Boys!! Just got back from seeing the show again...I don't think I can ever get tired of this show!!
And musicman...don't take it so personally about Wicked. I think what Foster was trying to say is that for the past two years, it seemed the only show that was consistently selling to full capacity was Wicked, and now there is another one.
Haha Foster!!

Cool, congrats to them for doing so well.
Oh, by no means do I think WICKED is of better quality than JERSEY BOYS and I did not take offense to Foster at all. I was just pointing out, from a business point of view, that WICKED still takes the cake.
*hugs all around*

Lest we forget, they are also charging $250/ticket for most of the orchestra which really helps in breaking house records.
"Take that, WICKED!"
This cannot be a serious comment. As already stated the Gershwin has packed 100% almost every week WITHOUT WINNING THE TONY FOR BEST MUSICAL and from sitting in both theatres numerous times (Jersey Boys - 2, Wicked - 3), I can assure you the Gershwin is MUCH MUCH MUCH bigger than the August Wilson. One more thing.... if the Gershwin allowed standing room, I am sure it would be packed to the bone but in that theatre that idea is absurd. Bravo to Jersey Boys but there is no need to disrespect Wicked because financially it has run over everything in it's path. Despite popular opinion on this board, I happen to love Wicked! Applause to the girl in GREEN!!
There slightly over 1,935 seats at the Gershwin Theater.
There are 1,275 seats at The August Wilson.

Wow. Who was the genius who predicted that once he/she got the word out, "to the people," about JLY's illnesses and absences, the box office would plummet and it would "harm Broadway?"

Kudos to that. No matter what your opinion may be on Wicked, you can't deny that it is, and will be for a long ammount of time, the number one show on Broadway. Just because it isn't your favorite, Foster, doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad show. In my opinion it's a great show, my favorite along with Les Mis and Sweeney, but that's beside the point. What I'm trying to say is that you don't need to go around implying that a show is bad.
&& Congrats to Jersey Boys!
I wonder if it'll stay this good after John Lloyd Young leaves.

First off, it was not a serious comment. And all that your comment -- that the Gershwin fills to capacity without having won the Tony for Best Musical -- says, is that mainstream America likes s h i t t y theater.
(damn censors)
"First off, it was not a serious comment. And all that your comment -- that the Gershwin fills to capacity without having won the Tony for Best Musical -- says, is that mainstream America likes sh;tty theater."
No it doesn't. It's one show out of the thousands of shows playing in this country. Just because it didn't win Best Musical yet the theater is still filled doesn't make a show "sh!tty," only in your opinion.
Read the reviews, hun. It won 3 Tonys; for its million dollar hideous sets and costumes, and somehow Idina Menzel ended up with a Tony. But by now, they have "decreased" the former sets and costumes in exchange for cheaper running costs (a la "Beauty & the Beast"), and Idina left the show a while ago.
Oh god.
Do we really have to beat this dead horse anymore?
Read the reviews? A review is one's opinion. Just because it is published makes a their opinion more valid?
I saw it. I didn't think it was sh*t. I thought the costumes were among the most beautiful I've seen and I loved the sets. Maybe those were the show's strongest aspects. Maybe it's not the majority opinion on this board, but I'm sure there are other people who agree with me.
Even if it's not the opinion of the majority of this snobby board, it's the opinion of the majority of America, as it proves every week at the box office. Now this isn't a Wicked thread so to get back on topic:
Congrats to Boys!

I think it will GlindaBerry, especially if they bump Michael Longoria up to play Frankie Valli after John leaves(which probably won't be for awhile).
I also want to say congrats to the boys for breaking the record yet again.

Thanks for proving my point about the snobbiness of this board!

"Not by quality."
And by that criteria neither is Jersey Boys.
