I was at opening night and it was, indeed, a mess...but a fun mess. The overture started and was so great that the audience was excited. Then the mess started. Those damn sweatshirts!
Jim was on and did an okay job, but I think Shepherd is impossible to play as written. He's not that interesting, and if the lead is a heel, at least make him an interesting one.
Ann Morrison was terrific, funny and touching, and I thought she'd be right back on the boards after this flopped, but nope. Lonny was also great, and I "Franklin Shephard, Inc." got the most applause of the evening.
The score will always be the star here, and no amount of fixing will get that book together. Maybe flipping it, as gdelgi suggests...but I dont know.
