...per Lincoln Center's website. Not sure the theatre has been mentioned before? Previews March 19 for an April 16 opening. It's a wonderful play - I think easily my favorite of the entire Wilson cycle. I still have vivid memories of Delroy Lindo's performance in the original production during the haunting "City of Bones" sequence. The Belasco will be a good choice for it...
Joe Turner at the Belasco
I think it says a lot that many of the houses becoming vacant are filling up so fast.
We have JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE going into The Belasco, STORY OF MY LIFE going into The Booth, BLITHE SPIRIT going into The Shubert, 33 VARIATIONS going into The O'Neill, GOD OF CARNAGE going into The Jacobs, MARY STUART going into The Broadhurst, EXIT THE KING going into The Barrymore, and reasons to be pretty going into The Lyceum, as well as HAIR going into The Hirschfeld, GUYS AND DOLLS going into The Nederlander, and 9 TO 5 going into The Marquis.
The Neil Simon and The Hilton seem to be the only ones of the upcoming bunch losing a show that don't have immediate tenants in site, although DIRTY DANCING and SPIDER-MAN are rumored to be on the horizon for both.
So much for the "death" of Broadway.
Do the Longacre and St. James have spring tenants?

Not at the moment.
Still, when you consider that most of the Broadway houses are now booked for the spring, and we're also getting a renovated Nederlander Theatre and a rebuilt from scratch Henry Miller's Theatre, there is indeed a flip side to the "End of Broadway" prognostication that has been going on.
Don't forget the Circle in the Square, which has been empty since the For Colored Girls ordeal...

I was just wondering... is PURE COUNTRY ever going to happen? It might be possible for it to get the St. James.
August Wilson plays, as great as they are, generally do not run that long. If you put it in the Belasco that is asking for a quick closure.
SO looking forward to this !!! Love Wilson, and would love to see Chisholm as part of cast. He was simply astounding in "Radio Golf" !

the death of broadway might be a little bit of an exaggeration, yes, but everything you just listed are plays- much less expensive to produce, generally smaller casts, etc.
nobody can deny that those who fund the production of these plays are hurting, big time, financially. nobody can deny that those who usually pay for these tickets are hurting financially.
its not the death of broadway but it would be foolish to think that because some small straight plays are being thrown up onto the great white way, that everything is alright...

This is an Lincoln Center production so the theater they're putting it in is not that big a factor. If you check the schedule on the LCT website, it's listing dates from March thru June.
I think it's wonderful we are getting all these plays. It seems like Broadway it's reacting to the economy by putting on inexpensive, quality productions that I feel might not have opened in a different economy when producers bet on big brash (and sometimes too empty and awful) musicals.
