"'Love Believes' is the story of a troubled rock star who feels empty inside even at the height of his fame. But his fans love him and one of them is finally successful at breaking down his barriers and showing him true love." No information has been released about the writer(s) of the song..."
And Snarky, I just meant that for 99 cents, that is a lot of bars of music! And it is not QUITE 5 minutes, about 10 seconds short. So really, it is not "pretentious" at all.

I think our own Corine met JLY's mother/publicist and said she was very down to earth and pretty.

When I think of a successful actor, the first thing that pops into my mind is a photoshopped tear and plastic angel wings.
I don't even know what to say about this..Pathetic? Hilarious? Just an attempt to try to be "artsy" or "deep" that went very, very wrong.

Sueleen, the very fact that he is singing a song about a troubled star who feels empty in the face of adoring fans is nothing if not a pretentious subject for a song. Add onto that this laughably self-important album cover of him in angel wings shedding a single tear makes for a perfect storm of pretention.

I just don't get why that makes it pretentious. Are you sure that's the word you're looking for?

Pretentious- adj. attempting to impress by affecting greater importance.
I think a broadway star dressing himself as a greased up ANGEL shedding a SINGLE TEAR and singing about how painful it is to find happiness and love being so famous is a perfect example of "attempting to impress by affecting greater importance."
Yes that is exactly the word I was looking for.

I'd like to get back, if we may, to the efficacy of his nipples appearing, as they do, on the cover.
Do they augment--or deter from--the message?

I've always enjoyed John Lloyd Young's work, but this cover picture has the word 'kitsch' written all over it. And the song doesn't sound too good either, if you ask me.
Why isn't he going back to Broadway? Is he not willing to or not wanted?

Snarky, you said the subject matter of the song was pretentious. And so that was what I was referring to with my question, and I still don't get why it would be pretentious.

you don't think it's pretentious for semi (but not all that) famous people to sing about the pain and heartache of being famous? that's unfortunate.

I don't think it's pretentious. I think it's silly and misguided, but not pretentious.
Sueleen, you should see if coco can maybe set up a playdate with JLY at the Corner.
ETA - wait, is the Corner still around?

I find the efficacy of his nips (though a good size) is reduced by that bad makeup job on his face.
And unless the message is "I am taking my nipples and flying straight to GayTown" their importance is lost on me.
Elke, the later.

SUV drivers are pretentious, especially when they take up two parking spots.

As I said, I don't think "pretentious" is an accurate word.

You CAN listen to a sample of the song.
Find it on itunes, click on the song name, then when the blue play button shows up to the left, click on it.

I purchased the song and kind of regret it. I like JLY, but the girl singing with him is horrific.
It reminds me of a Meat Loaf song. :|

Wasn't it mentioned here a few months ago how JLY was trying to return to Jersey Boys. Poor thing has to realize sooner or later that the show is the draw and not necessarily his performance.
