?We have to have a guy who looks believably Italian, who?s about 5-foot-6, who has no break between his chest voice and his falsetto,? said Elice, who wrote the show with Marshall Brickman. ?[This musical needs] somebody who?s willing to swim for two hours every day so he can breathe and have breath control to deliver this vocal performance.?
Aspiring actors also spend time at what Elice affectionately calls ?Camp Castelluccio? (Castelluccio is Valli?s real last name).
?At this ?Frankie Camp,? we bring in kids who have possibilities. ? I don?t think we could just bring someone in who could just play this part because it?s so demanding,? Elice said. ?You have to train for it, like an athlete for an event.?
Bwarie said Frankie Camp is the same for any guy going in for the role, and it?s scheduled before the final audition. ?Some people assume that it happens after you get the job, [that] you get whisked away to the woods and roast marshmallows with other Italian-looking guys,? he said.
?They give you the singing, acting and dancing technique and sort of the style of the era and of the real man himself.? Jersey Boys Blog
Speaking as someone who used to be a fan of his, I thought he was talented in JB, but really liked him because he seemed like a great guy who truly cared about the show and his fans. However, as jennafan has said, he has done stuff in his personal life that, despite his talent, makes me not like him as a person. I respect him as an actor but no longer would call myself a fan of his and know people who feel the same way. I'm sure there would be more people who felt that way if they opened their eyes. He is by no means the same person he was in 2005 when the show opened and that is really sad. I must say, let him stay in LA not really being successful; I don't want to see him back in NYC. He seems to have had his lil LA makeover and is by no means the John Lloyd Young that was on Broadway.
somebody please explain these "personal life" instances that everyone has issues with. I haven't heard anything about lea or JLY and i'm really curious!
"What I heard was he was in a relationship and then ran off with that Spring Awakening chick. Weird."
If this is the measure of whether or not you (and I mean a general you here, not you specifically) like a Broadway actor, then there are going to be many that should be disliked. It's funny that JLY gets bashed for this but never Norbert Leo Butz, or Will Chase, or Michael C. Hall, to name just a very few who fit into this category.
I have no idea if JLY is a jerk. I do know, however, that his performance in JB was magical when I saw it. No other individual in the show, in any of the lead roles, in any of the casts I've seen, came close to that for me, except for Jeremy Kushnier as Tommy. I would guess that many people would love to see JLY return to the show.
erinrebecca, ignoring the fact IF he was in a relationship or not....
He completely changed when he started dating the SA girl. I guess THAT is what I had issues with. Like I said, he turned into a male version of her. It ain't pretty.
I don't condone cheating (IF there was any), but the bigger issue is above.
JLY is mad talented, and I had been a fan, but I have no desire to meet him or see him in anything here in LA. He can go back to NY for all I care and take whatsherface with him. :)
What, has "original cast member who went to Hollywood and fell flat on their face because this role is all they were good at" replaced "American Idol reject" as the newest casting cliché?

jennafan, you have stated 'what you heard'. It sounds as though you do not know JLY, and have no firsthand knowledge about what's he's done or how he has acted. How do you know "he completely changed"? This sounds like a classic example of someone reading fan message boards and believing every rumor they hear to be fact, in addition to feeling as though they know the individuals involved.
