I'm kinda depressed about this. I just saw Beauty and the Beast with Donny and now I have to go see it AGAIN!
Oh well. I'll get cheap tix somewhere.

Just got in from Johnny's first night! Fans and all alike, he is a WONDERFUL addition to B&B! Absolutely, positively amazing, obviously wants to be there, and seems to be having a blast! And this is just after his very first night. It's wonderful to see this awesome role in such talented hands again. Go see him!!

I passed him last night talking to some people about it, including E. Clayton Cornelious of ACL, holding a bouquet, saying "It was my first night tonight, it went really well..." as I passed. He had a huge grin on his face, it was clear he had a great night.

I'm glad to hear he is loving it. When I saw him a couple months ago he said he would be back on Broadway. So I planned a whole trip around seeing him as Lumiere. A little over a month to go.
Gah, I don't even know what specifically to say but he was great. His amazing personality came through in the role and he made it so warm and funny and just...great. His accent is pretty down, and you can still hear his beautiful voice through it. He definitely is thrilled to be there and enjoying himself, and I mean from what people seem to say about first performances (I don't go to many I guess), he did a really really great job. Apparently he was really nervous before, but you couldn't tell.
And it's so great to see him interact with the children! There were these little girls right by us who he kneeled down to talk to one of them and took a picture and the younger one got out of her carriage and was standing there and he was like "Hi, how did you like the show?" And she just stood there...scared/shy...so he went she loved it so much, she's speechless. It was so cute. He made time for all of them and took pictures and such. And even...well...ya know considering he had to chase a woman around...it wasn't...totally unbelievable. He's really great, I'm so happy for him--go see him!
(Babs, great to meet you tonight! I told him that a huge Beauty fan thought he was great, so he was very happy )
And I can't believe I forgot that Jafar was Cogsworth...boo.

Just couldn't resist posting that I saw him again last night...and now I have a Mama and the Papa's song stuck in my head...anyway, I said how great he was his first performance and he only improved. He *really* has the accent down now and has wonderful chemistry with really everyone. And he just does little things...like stays in character so much no matter where he is on the stage...either with that big grin on his face, or sadness or fear or whatever's appropriate. And he has such an excitement as Lumiere, he kind of runs off the stage ahead of Jonathan who kind of lags behind and it is just *such* an appropriate...movement for Lumiere and Cogsworth. Also is very comfrortable with the "dancing." He's just adorable to watch on that stage.
Also there was an understudy for Belle, and I really do love Sarah, but...I think her name was Ana Maria something...will check the playbill when I get a chance...she was just fantastic. What a power voice, and it was her first time working with Donny and John and Jonathan, and she really had great chemistry with everyone, and it was a treat to see her. Kind of made me wish for an understudy Beast
For those of you inquiring about pics of him as Lumiere, there is now one of those big ones outside the Lunt. I have a ****ty camera that never works, otherwise I would have taken a picture of the picture and posted it. But yeah you could go there to see it, and take a pic and post it for others if you want.
Re: cheap tickets. I'm not sure if this is just certain nights, the whole thing confuses me...when at times it appeared that the cheapest seats should have been $40, the cheapest I could get was $50...I don't know if that differs on different nights or...whatever. But last night I got a $40 ticket...all the way up but the mezz was unfortunately fairly empty (not a great audience) so we were able to move down a couple rows and then I moved to front row of the mezz intermission. (And can I say that is without a doubt the best seats for this show--it was pretty amazing to see it from there). And I mean yeah, $40 is more expensive than most rushes, but it's only a couple of bucks more than Company's rush and a TDF ticket. And I'm sure they weren't selling SRO tickets last night.
So yeah, any fans of John...go see Beauty. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the wonderful review! How long is he in the show?
I was actually upset to hear he joined at first because I had seen it one week earlier with Donny. If I had known he was coming I would've waited. Oh well! I'll try to see it tommorow or the next day!
Thanks!
