Joining Multiple Unions?

Hello,
There was a thread yesterday about becoming an usher on broadway and that there is a whole usher union. I was wondering that if I were to move to NYC and get my Equity card and just be doing all the auditions and stuff.....if it would be possible to be in the ushers union as well and have that as a regular job untill i got into a show. It seems like it would be the ideal job for an actor... just so you could get to see other peoples work and improve on your own skills. Any one know if this is possible to join two unions?

I don't see why not, though, being an actor AND an usher would most likely clash your scedules...
PS - It will take awhile to get your equity card, and for joining the usher union, you really need to know a House Manager or longtime usher....

Actually, I suggest actors straight out of college do non-equity work for the first year or so before gettin their Equity card. As far as the other union, it is a small circle. You have to know someone to get into that gig.

Otherwise you have to accummulate points by working in various Equity theatres over a set amount of time. I don't know how the ushers union works...you may be able to join without actually being employed. But, that alone won't get you a job. You really need to know someone to get a job. The easiest thing to do is become a substitute usher, and then you would fill in for someone. Keep in mind though, that many ushers find their own subs and don't go through the union, so your best bet is to have a friend who works as an usher or house manager.
