Hahaha! Me too!
Of course it's weird, bizzare and over-the-top... come on, it's the Joker we're talking about! Of course they're would be other songs that would emphasize his darker side... but this song is supposed to be light; anyone who has seen Tim Burton's Batman would know that... the line "Where does he get all those wonderful toys?" is from the museum scene where him and his thugs show up blaring music and he's running around, destroying everything, DANCING... this song fits that bit incredibly well.
And hi, Ryan.

Exactly!!!
And it's not like The Joker is The Phantom of the Opera. All these comments about "oh my God, it was crap", half of them are un-substantiated rubbish.
And if anyone wants to have a go at me about how "excessive" my website is, then LOL you're wasting your time. Jim Steinman is
"excessive", it's SUPPOSED to be "excessive". You make tributes to Sondheim, you do it in the appropriate way. You make tributes to anyone, you do it in the way that people would expect, i.e. if there was an eulogy that summed up who they were: and Jim is about as over-the-top as you can go. Don't sit there and spoon-feed me that rubbish, because I am tired of choking
I rest my case.
I think the song fits, I am as closely-guarded of Batman as I am of Steinman, have loved Batman and all its ephemera since I was four years old, AND **I THINK IT WORKS**
And if you can't deal with my opinion, *BUILD A BRIDGE* *GET OVER IT!*
Awful song. It doesn't make sense. What's the point of the song?
I love Jim Steinman as a composer, but this is just an awful introduction to the possibility of a Batman musical.

Well, I don't know what you people were expecting from a song sung by a guy who spends half his time in Arkham Asylum... Please! Everyone says "it sucks" and so on but no one has provided any explanation for why they think it does. I personally think it captures the Joker's lighter, gleeful mad side to perfection... not to mention Jim's performance on the recording is one of the most incredibly funny I've ever heard in my life.

Y'know... maybe people think it sucks because they don't "get it"... they're not 'into' Batman. (Just guessing here)
It's SUPPOSED to be insane.
Stop over-reacting. (is that one word or two?)

I really liked that!
lol, this is cool. the internet is great isn't it.
This reminds me of a comment that Rolling Stone magazine made when the "Batman" movie came out (what, 15 years ago?).
They said that the character "Batman" in the movie had a lot in common with the character "Phantom of the Opera" in the musical:
They both wear masks
They both have underground lairs
They both have cool logos
and
They both have bad music

I'm a huge Batman fan.
I still hate the song.
It's repetitive, the melody is awful, the lyrics suck, and if that's the funniest thing you've ever heard...then I'm sad for you.
You can argue with me if you like but I really don't care. So rockfenris, if you're done trying to convert people to Steinmanism, why don't you start working on that bridge.

Lestat anyone?

Mythus, there is a problem with doing that. So many people in this community, upon hearing the name Jim Steinman, immediately think of something he wasn't responsible for: THAT show that played at the Minskoff.
And it's true, he had nothing to do with the final product. Before the announcement of closing, he was seen to be sitting in the crowd taking notes at a fiendish pace, trying to find a "last minute" solution to making the show dark. As he intended. That show, with no offense to anyone involved, went against everything he ever lived for. And that is WHAT he is remembered for, around these places. I will not WASTE my time converting people when so many have the impression he made that monster.
As for opinions like "Joe Brooks, anyone? Or Lestat anyone?" Why do people bother? I come to message-forums to commune with people, with opinions, not random insults.

I think the demo is not trying to be anything more than it is-a DEMO. I'm sure the final stage version would have gone (maybe still yet) through some great orchestrations. Imagine adding some electric guitar riffs to this...Same goes for the lyrics, I'm sure it would go through rewrites until they had something concrete...
The song is crazy yes, but catchy and fun. I admit the first time I listened to it, I was unimpressed, yet I constantly find myself playing it over and over and humming the tune. I'm excited for the other demos-I am a big Jim Steinman AND Batman Movie fan...so maybe that's why I think it works? Regardless, I hope to see more of Batman the Musical in the future...

Erm...no. It's not a good song...but it doesn't make me judge the wole project. Some nice parts to it (music wise). I think it would be better in the context of the show.
I still am looking forward to this (even though this is not one of my favorite steinman songs)! Now, Rockfenris, have you heard anything about this still in the possibility of being produced because I thought it got a put on hold (canned) a while back? And also, You said something about Jim Steinman releasing a demo CD of Batman...Anything more about it like, how many songs? what charachters are covered? Where do you go to get one? and about when will they be available? If you know any answers that would be great!!! Do you know any specific reason why he is releasing a demo CD to the fans? THANK YOU SO MUCH!
If there is a specific website that covers some of the questions i asked if you could just point me in the right direction and I can read about. Thanks again!

That "Get a load of me" part melody is in everything he does, it seems.
The song was quite different and the lyrics aren't...good. But there's no denying it is totally Steinman and could probably work for the Joker.
I would also like to say that those cacklings at the end of the song are frightening. Its like dead on with what Nicholson sounded like in the movie. Especially the first time he laughs where he is about to say something about his mother and then he stops mid phrase and starts to snicker! INTENSE!

RFENRIS2005:
The last I heard it was cancelled during D.O.T.V's run (probably because of the failure of D.O.T.V.) That was in January 2003.
Gregg Maday, president of Warner Bros. Theater Ventures, mentioned something about it while promoting Lestat

And also, You said something about Jim Steinman releasing a demo CD of Batman...
RFENRIS2005:
Jim is talking to Steve Rinkoff, his partner / associate producer, about releasing the demos to the fans. People involved with these were: Rob Evan, Karine Hannah, Elaine Caswell and Steinman himself (probably others, but I haven't heard anything)
DOTVMIKE: Anything more about it like, how many songs? what charachters are covered?
RFENRIS2005:
I'm not sure. But I know of *these* songs connected to the musical:
In The Land Of The Pigs The Butcher Is King (Gotham City anthem)
Wonderful Toys (The Joker's Song) (what we've just heard)
Not Allowed To Love (Bruce Wayne / Batman and Selena Kyle / Catwoman duet) &
I Need All The Love I Can Get (a Catwoman song)
DOTVMIKE:
Where do you go to get one? and about when will they be available?
RFENRIS2005:
Jim released "Wonderful Toys" to his fans at the Multimedia section of jimsteinman.com
I'm presuming that's where it will be made available. The reason he's probably doing this is because the show was cancelled. I don't see why he would make them available otherwise. He is very private

I LOVED it! I hope he puts out a CD!!
It's bad because it makes no sense. Yes, the Joker is crazy and insane, but he has to have a good enough grasp on reality and the situation that he can sing a song that makes sense in the context of a musical. If he's so crazy that he makes literally no sense, how does he find his henchmen and carry out his plans? There seems to be no reason for him to start singing, and the song has no reason for being there.
I really enjoyed the end of the song. All the random ramblings seem to establish that he's psycho. Shouldn't the song push the plot? Nothing happens.
