I had the pleasure of seeing this new national tour last night in Boston. I had never seen a professional production of the show, so I decided to give it a shot. I am very glad I did!

Amy Adams as the Narrator. Excellent. She was holding back a bit in Act I (she seemed to kick it up a notch in the Potiphar scene, but then her mic started acting up every time she made a noise, so she toned down the number). However, she really let loose vocally in "Go, Go, Go Joseph" and in Act II. Amy really seems perfectly cast - she has just the right stage presense and demeanor on stage, really fitting in, but at the same time standing out. At the stagedoor, she was very friendly and gratious (and has one of the cutest babies I have ever seen). She was the highlight of this production. I agree with every review I've read of her: she's got major potential in musical theater.

Patrick Cassidy as Joseph. While I enjoyed him in the role, there were many flaws. He certainly owns the stage as the title role, and his "Close Every Door" was chill-inspriring, I couldn't get over the way he formed some of his words. It's almost as if there was a Southern-twang to some words ("close eeeeveeery door"). The people I was with didn't notice it too much, but it bothered me (probably because my voice teacher harps on my vowel-forming, but whatever). Some people said he just seems too old for Joseph - sure, he is, but his age didn't take anything from the show. He acting was very youthful, and he certainly looks great. Afterwards, at the stagedoor, I had him sign my original Assassins CD booklet. He (and his wife!) were both very nice.

Ensemble. Really top-notch. I've seen productions of this with great casts, but one weak brother, which brings everything down. Not the case here - no weak link in the ensemble, really. Great dancing, great singing, great energy. Very enjoyable.

Production. For the most part, I really enjoyed the show from a production-standpoint. The modernization of the show was quite funny (Amy taking pictures with the cell phone at the end was very funny). The lighting was spot-on, really adding to the show. The sets were also very fun, and fit the show very well. Other than the previously mentioned mic issue with Amy, the sound was decent. The costumes were all fine, with the exception of the cheerleader outfits for "Go, Go, Go Joseph"... I do belive those take the cake for ugliest costumes I've seen (yes, even beating Sweet Charity's Brass Band costumes): neon yellow and pink day-glo outfits should be banned by law. Sure, they fit with the number, but still...

Overall, I enjoyed this production very much. It's coming back to my area in February, I'll definately see it again (especially if Amy is still with the show). If you get the chance, go see this show!
