Yeah, but Paul condemns sexuality (and women) in general. Petrine thought, which is the branch more commonly associated with Catholicism, is more concerned with good works and noble acts; Pauline thought, more associated with Protestantism and Evangelicism, is more concerned with rules of faith and law.

Neither one officially "spoke for Jesus," and it's telling that they have a conflict and it's never really resolved which was right or wrong.

Of course, you don't have to believe any of that is divinely inspired, or believe that these men did the things they say they did. Hell, you can even go a few steps further and say these men literally did not exist at all! It's your prerogative, and God (the deity of your choice, or the absence thereof) bless America for allowing, even encouraging, these debates.

Yes, there are many, many people who truly need to believe in deities, miracles, heaven, hell, ghosts, vampires, werewolves, Abbot & Costello (well, maybe not the last), because without those irrational beliefs, the observable physical universe is either too chaotic or too banal for them to bear.

And there are others for whom the observable physical universe is just fine, in no need of imaginary gussying up.

It usually seems that the first group is the majority, doesn't it?

[Sorry for lying about not posting anymore.]

newintown, I agree with your perspective completely. I've heard believers express distaste for the theory of evolution; the thought that we evolved from other animals (and, going back far enough, microorganisms) seems base to them, and they'd rather see humans as the direct result of divine creation. I don't begrudge them that, but that doesn't ring true to me at all. I think the idea that our brains, eyes, ears, and all the rest were shaped by natural forces throughout billions of years of evolution is rather stirring, far more inspiring to me than the idea that someone wished us into existence like Samantha twitching her nose.

darquegk: the context is interesting, though for me it's not materially different than old testament apologists attempting to contextiualize leviticus -- for believers, the text is problematic in any context. to the point (or at least my point), however, none of this changes the fact that the bible's teachings on homosexuality don't end at malachi.

I can't think of anything that better argues for the Divine than evolution. Except perhaps the fact that this planet, at least, has creatures able to conceive of such a process!

(Just to be clear, I'm saying Darwin and the work of others like him bolster my faith rather than threaten it. But I'm still in the area of faith. I'm not arguing that Darwin or anyone else scientifically proves the existence of a deity, nor do they intend to do so.)

ETA my apology to kdogg. You just said the same thing, basically, and with greater lyricism than I.

I am a total non-believer but have had a few near-death medical conditions throughout my 71 years. I try to live my life on Christian[my take on] values-thinking about/caring/helping others[and I'm sure no Saint!].

Stay with me---recently, due to a severe illness, I was told I was going to die if the anti-biotics didn't work. My dark humour asked if I could have that in writing. As I was hallucinating a soft blue cloud slowly and gently wafted down towards my face as if to smother me. I didn't resist, just let it happen and as it almost was upon me, I felt this gentle breeze from behind softly blow it away.

Obviously I not ready to go anywhere yet[beyond?] and that experience, whatever it might be, has NOT changed my religious feelings, I'm just grateful to the Doctors and the powerful anti-biotics.

It was a wonderful 'dream' and allowed me to forget the 3months that surrounded this physically and mentally unfortunate time in my life [and with the help of BWW and internet 'friends' of course].

If you continued reading--Thanks from SweetLips........x

Glad you're still with us, SL.

I'm not so arrogant as to try to define your experience. And hallucination or miracle, does it really make a difference?
