Interesting choice considering the majority of the target audience has likely never heard of Rent...

Most teenagers today have at least heard of Rent. Most likely they haven't ever seen it or will be able to recognize that song, but many teenagers, especially ones that watch a super pop culture reference heavy show like Riverdale, will be able to tell you what Rent is, or at the very least they will know Seasons of Love.

Riverdale is a show about teenagers, but teenagers aren't its only target audience. I can say with certainty that many of its viewers are gay men, in which case "Out Tonight" is not such a random choice.

Not crazy about it but curiosity is getting the better of me and I will probably watch it. A lot of people my age are watching it so they would know RENT.

I was all about Archie, Betty and Veronica when I was a kid, so I love watching this show. Fans of the original 90210/Melrose Place are another big audience for Riverdale. They actually cast the net pretty wide and quite wisely. They're doing a great job with this one.
Except for Valerie's hair. Who thought that was a good look? Ugh.

You all make good points... I'm in my 30's and I started watching it cause I grew up reading the comic books. I find it ridiculously stupid, but I just can't seem to stop watching. So I guess I assumed that the only people that put up with the ridiculous plot lines were teens. But I guess I'm not the only one who got sucked in! Though the comments on the YouTube video tell me that the majority of people commenting have no idea where the song is from, but I know that doesn't mean much.
