Judy Garland Musical

Posted: 1/1/09 at 4:33pmI was watching That's Entertainment! last night on TCM and Judy Garland performed quite a bit. There were certain times in her performances that she looked identical to Sutton Foster. I then had a brilliant (or seemed to be, at that time) idea. That why hasn't a musical been made about her life. She certainly is an icon and I think a musical in honor of her life would be great. Any thoughts? Would you like to see this happen eventually, perhaps with Sutton Foster or another actress? Please don't bash me.

Actually, a musical about Sid Luft would be more interesting.
And I take it you did not see Judy and Me?

No.

Posted: 1/1/09 at 6:24pmI actually have a demo CD of a UK-based Judy Garland musical called "Somewhere"... music by Kevin Baker, book & lyrics by Alan Langley. The show is narrated by Liza, and includes such (un)memorable songs as "Follow Your Own Brick Road" and "Colors of the Rainbow"... it's pretty terrible.

There was an award-winning show in Australia a few years ago called "End Of The Rainbow", which focussed on the last few weeks of Judy Garland's life - and it also had a run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2006. I saw it in Edinburgh and Caroline O'Connor, who played Judy, was absolutely sensational.

Playbill: Judy Sings Her Life Story in Beyond the Rainbow, Starting Jan. 7 in MI
"The life story of Judy Garland will be conjured at Meadow Brook Theatre in suburban Detroit with the production of William Randall Beard's play with music, Beyond the Rainbow, Jan. 7-Feb.
"Beyond the Rainbow "is set during a 1961 Carnegie Hall performance by Judy Garland," according to MBT. 'As she sings the songs that made her famous — 'The Trolley Song,' 'Get Happy' and 'Over the Rainbow' — the story of her life unfolds around her.'
"The play was commissioned by the History Theatre in Minneapolis, where it premiered. This is the Michigan premiere. Opening is Jan. 10."

It wasn't a musical, but I remember seeing "The Property Known as Garland" with Adrienne Barbeau a couple of years back. I liked that show; it took place in 1969, shortly before she died.
I love Judy, and I would love to see a musical on Broadway about her entire life- not just certain years.
