"Dream A Little Dream," a Mamas & the Papas jukebox musical ran Off-Broadway for a few months a couple of years ago. It featured original "Papa" Denny Doherty who might be still out there touring the show around the country. It flopped in New York, though.

Posted: 3/13/06 at 2:48pmIt was more a revue than an actually plotted show, though, right? I have the cd somewhere, but I only listened to it once or twice. I remember it featured "Denny Doherty and the Dream Band" or something like that.

Posted: 3/13/06 at 2:54pmI didn't see it, but my memory of it from friends who did involved Doherty doing a biographical tell all of the whole history of the Mamas & Papas from the beginning punctuated by the group's songs. It sounded like some combination concert/revue/bio-jukebox show -- whatever it was, it didn't have much appeal and couldn't sell enough tickets in the little Village Theatre in the West Village to stay open more than a few months.

Posted: 3/13/06 at 3:14pmI remember being underwhelmed by the cd (much as I was with my live cd with John and Denny were touring with the likes of Mackenzie Phillips and Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane). The more I think about it, the less likely I think they're music would work in a jukebox format, as it's pretty hard to beat the original. That seems to be the case with most of the jukebox musicals, I guess.

William Finn!
What? I... Did I misunderstand the question?

Posted: 3/13/06 at 3:40pmWell, I'd like to see a book developed around existing Robyn Hitchcock songs. It would be an insane good time. (It would have to end with the destruction of civilization and all life on earth, accompanied by raucous choreography and the song "Only the Stones Remain." Best. Finale. Ever.)

Posted: 3/13/06 at 3:59pmWhen I was in college my boyfriend and I tried to write a jukebox musical using Cher songs. It was supposed to be a sort of Dreamgirls-like show business story with love interests and whatnot. Sometimes I feel like re-visiting the idea. I'd also love to see a jukebox musical using Pink Floyd songs, something very artistic, metaphoric, and philosophical.

Well, Tommy Mottola and Miramax have announced plans to bring Pink Floyd's The Wall to Broadway at some point (when that will happen we'll have to wait and see).

Posted: 3/13/06 at 6:10pmI do not know if this would be a true "jukebox" musical but what about one using, for example, the trunk songs from Kander & Ebb or ones from their shows that never came to Broadway ?

Posted: 3/14/06 at 9:14amIn that vein, isn't "You Never Know" somewhat a Porter jukebox? I'm not too familiar with it, but it seems like a bunch of Porter songs from other collections all put together with a plot thought of afterward.

They were a European group of West Indian descent who did what could be called R&B/reggae/disco. Their Svengali, Frank Farian, went on to create Milli Vanilli. They had a lot of hits in the UK, but only a minor U.S. hit with "Rivers of Babylon" in 1979.
The Wikipedia entry on them indicates that there are a lot of parallels to Milli Vanilli in the history of the group, that could potentially give their story some "Jersey Boys"-ish dramatic heft, whether or not you knew the music:

And do you think that people will actually come and see it--people besides show tune queens?

Posted: 3/15/06 at 7:15pmactually 'dream a little dream' closed in nyc due to denny d. running into major problems with the show's producer ( he finally left with lots of advance tix sold and subsequently refunded). i happen to know that the producer begged him to stay on (the tix were selling very, very briskly).

How about American Idol - The Experience ?
3 actors are the judges & the contestants come from the audience - The final 12. The winner maybe gets $ 1000
I am waiting for the night on AI when they all have to sign Wildhorn
