Julie Andrews Send In The Clowns

I'm just watching Broadway's Lost Treasures (a Christmas present - fantastisch) and I am mesmerised by Julie Andrews enchanting performance of 'Send In The Clowns'. Does anyone know if there is a recording of her singing this on any CD?
Sidenote: Less impressed by Angela Lansbury's lip syncing to 'Worst Pies In London' and Patti LuPone's awful performance of 'Buenos Aires' (althought 'A New Argentina' was amzing so I'm going to buy the OBC of Evita based on that).

I agree with you regarding Julie's Send In The Clowns. Lovely phrasing with a true understanding/ reading of the lyric. Thanks for remnding me of this.
Not sure about a recording, but I am thinking there is. Where is Feodor? He would know!

Posted: 1/8/05 at 8:58amI have to agree with Glebb (whom I have reason to suspect is a Sondheim fan....). Angela L. can phone in lousy performances for the rest of her life if she chooses to; few performers have defined a role like she did Mrs. Lovett, and having seen her sing "worst pies"--even from the nose-bleed seats at The Uris--was a privilege.

Well, I don't think Patti lip-synced but it just seemed her 'Buenos Aires' was nothing comparable to her 'A New Argentina' (which I am tempted to say is better than Elaine The Goddess Paige's).
The recording they played of Lansbury was great, and I love her generally, but was cruddy that she lip-syned this one. If it wasn't so bloody expensive in the UK, I'd buy the OBC of Sweeney just for her!
AndyHardy: "Lovely phrasing with a true understanding/ reading of the lyric" - I think that's what it was. She looked so composed and in control of the song, like she knew it since she was born. It ranks as one of the best performances I've ever seen.

Posted: 1/8/05 at 11:44amThere is no other recording of Julie doing "Send In The Clowns" than the one from the Tony's. I've transferred it to CD (along with a bunch of other stuff that she has done on specials and "The Julie Andrews Hour(s)". To me, her voice was at its peak during her television show, and she sang so many great songs, wonderfully! How I wish they were all available!

Posted: 1/9/05 at 2:02pmGlebb, I have seen Julie live, in "My Fair Lady", "Camelot", "Putting It Together" and "Victor/Victoria", as well as in a Christmas concert at The Royal Albert Hall; and in concerts at Ceasar's Palace in Las Vegas and Valley Forge Music Fair and Wolf Trap. I, finally, met her at a dinner in Philadelphia, a few years ago. I was NOT disappointed!!! Please tell of your meetings!

Posted: 1/9/05 at 2:07pmWow you guys are so lucky. I probably wasn't even old enough... but I love Julie Andrews. She is amazing, and the best of her time period. It's so sad what happened to her voice. And if you're watching Broadway's lost Treasures on WITF or PBS, there is almost always a recording. But it's usually pretty pricey. If you're stilll interested, PM me.

Feodor - I am not, in general, a jealous person - in fact, it's my least favorite emotional response. BUT, I just felt a little envious of your history with Dame Andrews

Alas the only show I've seen her perform live is VICTOR/VICTORIA.
I only met her at a party in LA - 1983, (I never ended up going to my table the whole evening. I spoke with she and her husband for a good while), and about five years ago she gave a lecture in Chicago. Each attendee was allowed a few minutes of her time afterwards. :)
But from what I read that you've seen her perform live, you are the lucky one!

I asked her if there was any way to get my hands on a video/movie of her in Camelot and she said the only thing that exists is the Ed Sullivan Show stuff and the movie.
There must be a film of Julie and Richard out there!

Posted: 1/9/05 at 2:30pmThere has always been a rumor that a film exists of "My Fair Lady" and "Camelot"; but I have never, ever been able to substantiate it. It was believed that when Hollywood studios purchased film rights, they would go to the theater and film the stage show. Although, in the case of both shows, Julie would have already been gone (MFL - she was in the London production of it (the production that I saw), when Warner's purchased the rights; and "Camelot", she was doing "Mary Poppins", when Warner's purchased those rights). Just a bit of trivia (sad but true), many believe that Julie could not have done "Mary Poppins" had she been cast in "My Fair Lady"; but it isn't true. If you see the production schedules for both, it was "The Americanization of Emily" and "The Sound of Music" that conflicted with "My Fair Lady". Principal photography for MP was finished just as MFL began. Disney was adding all the special effect and animation to MP while MFL was filming. I can't even imagine TSOM without Julie Andrews and we do have a couple of recordings of her in MFL, so I'm glad things worked out the way they did.

Posted: 1/9/05 at 2:38pmThe only film I've ever seen of My Fair Lady was taken during rehearsals - Julie with a dialect coach, and she and Rex rehearsing with the orchestra.

Posted: 1/9/05 at 2:48pmI figured it was a re-enactment, but I never knew where it came from - I always assumed it was some promotional thing. I saw it as part of a TV special on Lerner and Loewe.
