Julie Wilson Sings Sondheim

The late cabaret legend sings 39 minutes of Sondheim in 1984, live outdoors at Rockefeller Center. Despite the obvious limitations of her voice, her singing is a master class in phrasing--especially when she sings from Follies and Merrily.

It even starts to rain at one point, but Julie Wilson keeps on singing.

Another fabulous video from the miraculous Alan Eichler.

joey, maybe it's just me. But I don't see a link in your post.

P.S. I got to see Julie in her 80s and everything you say about her is true. I worked with her on a production of SHOW BOAT in the 1970s: she played Julie, appropriately enough, had a lovely contralto sound and was a consummate professional.

Julie Wilson Sings Sondheim

I treasure the memory of having seen her many years ago at Michael's Pub when it had moved above a bar that, I believe, was called Bill's Gay 90s. She did Sondheim and many others that night. When she sang a song, it became a one-act play. Every song she touched was the better because of it.

I'm sad I never saw her perform...and I had plenty of chances. Thanks for posting this.
