What about Jennifer Holliday as Miss Celie in "Color Purple". We all know she can sing it and she *does* look better now than she did during her "glory days". I would be interested in seeing her do the role.
She's too old and she won't sell tickets. I'm hoping 'Tasia will be Broadway's last celebrity Celie so we can get rid of The Oprah Show.
Just a thought...
How about putting a real title in the subject header?
So it is done, Diva.
At any rate, I would hardly call Jennifer Holliday a "celebrity" ... not by today's standards at least. I think she would sing it beautifully, though.
Jennifer Holliday is not only too old for Celie, but she can't act. What she did in DREAMGIRLS pretty much worked for that show and never again since, as her acting credentials can attest.
I would like to see Carla Duren (Currently in "110") get a shot. She has an excellent voice, and would like to see it showcased a bit more.
I would say she's got it in her. She showed us she can act with Dreamgirls. She needs a hard-ass hands-on director like Michael Bennett to get it out of her, though.
The fellow who directed Color Purple is certainly no Michael Bennett, that's for sure.
I'd even settle for hearing her sing the songs. They're certainly suited to her voice.
Also, how is she too old? Celie ranges from teen to past middle age ... she falls in there somewhere.
