I think the "confusion" is something that is based in the difference between New York and London audience, so you're both right Testing/Mama.
New York audiences expect the show to end and to (either justifiably or unjustifiably) give a standing ovation and leave the theater. If they really love a show, they'll stand midway through the curtain call and in this instance, that leaves the audience standing for a full 5-minute song, thus the confusion.
I'd say that this type of finale is more common in London ("this type" meaning a curtain followed by either a full song or montage of songs leading into the final bow). For example: a British-loved show - Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat's elongated finale/curtain sequence.

Posted: 10/19/08 at 10:44amLogan, when I saw the show, everyone stood during the initial portion of the curtain call, but when Billy started to dance, everyone sat back down. It was clear that there would be an additional dance number and everyone sat back down to watch it, then stood again at the end when Billy bows alone. I didn't detect any confusion in the audience as to what was happening.
