This is truly sad..what a wonder he was in Oklahoma.
But what's even sadder is that 62 peoplehave seen this thread so far and NOT ONE of them has had any comment.
I'm sure it would be different if Eden passed.

Was he ill?
He was really an amazing performer...
That sucks. He had an awesome voice... very booming and dramatic. What I wish I sounded like.
Turns out he was an untrained singer, which was surprising to me.
EDIT: No, apparently he was trained, and took singing lessons at 25 cents a piece. Wow.

SO SAD. He will be missed.

I would bet that that is because 90% of the people on this borad have never heard of him.

That is why I didnt respond. Very sad though.
Thats incredibly sad. I loved him in the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Kiss Me Kate movies. (I edited this because I nearly forgot Showboat! ) He was amazing.
An amazing voice. When I heard "Old Man River" on the radio, followed by the sad news of Howard Keel's passing, I remembered how much I have always enjoyed hearing him sing.

I'm sorry to say I've not heard of him, but its always sad when the Broadway family loses a member.

I don't have any of his recordings, but I have heard his voice. We've really lost a wonderful artist.
oh wow this is sad, he's passed on the very day the "dallas" reunion show will air on CBS. keel has left a musical legacy behind with classic performances in "Kismet" and "Kiss Me Kate" to name two. he was also very well known for his role of "clayton farlow" on the prime time drama "dallas"...may he rest in peace.
RIP to an extroardinarily talented and handsome man.

I also enjoyed him in the ANNIE GET YOUR GUN movie.
Very sad. I remember well his performance in the film remake of ShowBoat.

To the best of my knowledge, Howard Keel was NOT in the Broadway productions of OKLAHOMA! or CAROUSEL. However he did play the leads in the movie versions. I think he and Barbara McNair were the replacements for Diahnn Carroll and Richard Kiley in NO STRINGS.
I saw Mr. Keel in a summer tour/revival of UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN opposite Tammy Grimes. He had a commanding stage presence and a marvelous voice. After the show he was extremely cordial to his well-wishers.
He will be missed.
No dollypop Howard Keel did not play the leads in the movie versions of CAROUSEL and OKLAHOMA! That was Gordon Macrae.

An IBDB search would easily answer that question for you.

That's really sad, I used to watch him all the time when I was a kid. And it's very true what was said before - he was never in WICKED, so that means 89% of people on this board have never heard of him.
I'm very afraid for the future of musical theater if our younger generation does not even know who he was.
God forbid they know who Alfred Drake, Nannett Fabray or John Raitt are.
But Eden!! She'll LIVE FOREVER!!!!!!!
