Okay, I have been a part of this theatre company in MS for a few years now and they decided to do Cats this May...bad idea because there are not many dancers and this is a dancing show! And to tell you the truth, we only have 5 or 6 powerful singers. That's not a lot. I was thinking about not doing this in the first place because I know it's going to be crappy singers doing crappy choreography in BLUE JEANS! But it's something to put on the resume sooo...I decided I would. But then I read the auditions:
Auditions for CATS
Thursday, February 22, 2007 - Adults and Older Teens
Tuesday, February 27, 2007 - Children
.....children.....CHILDREN!? I couldn't beleive my eyes! Is it just me or does anyone else think this will SUCK!?
"And to tell you the truth, we only have 5 or 6 powerful singers. "
So I guess in this production "Cats" will not start with a "C?"
That's my favorite part.

Surely you misunderstood - they must be doing the prequel to Cats - "Kittens".
Oh Wow.
I'm sorry.
This is exactly why I practically Begged my high school Director NOT to do CATS in my Senior Year a few years ago.
I went to a Catholic school, one with a very shallow talent pool.
We had about 4 singers worth mentioning and about 5 good dancers. And in a theater program where the students make up the choregraphy this was deffinately not a great plan.
He was convinced it was a brilliant idea..
I begged and pleaded with him not to do it. He finally consented.
And then he decided to do Seussical.
I feel your pain, and if you ever need a support group...
Best of Luck.

Haha. That would be different. Too bad they're completely serious about this!
We also did Pageant the season before last and they stuck a kids chorus in that too! AND they did it with women...only 2 men.

"Isnt the rights to CATS not available"
Isnt there be no english classes in your town???
Ha. So, Nathan Lane stalker. Listen...if you think it'll be a drag consider it carefully, even if it's for another resume credit. The last thing anyone wants is an unhappy cast member in a community production. It should be FUN.
BTW, I grew up doing HCLO shows! I always loved those folks and performing in the Saenger. What a great old theatre!

Yes, the rights to CATS are available. I was in it, sadly.
Anyway, maybe the auditions for kids are just for the parts of the kittens? Like Etcetera and Pouncival? And maybe Victoria? Or other random, nameless kittens? Maybe...?

The local community theatre did CATS last year with a cast of 40 - including around 8 "kittens".
There is a photo in the Rodgers & Hammerstein newsletter (they license the rights)of a production with a cast of 65 - including a dozen kittens.
Face it = putting kids in a show sells a buttload of tickets.

I also love performing with them and even if the show is bad I'd still have fun! Like I did when I did George M!, Joseph..., and Pageant. Not so good productions but I had fun with the people.
CATS is fun. It's a horrible show, but it's a good workout...and is also great to make fun of while in it.

Wow. I feel your pain. I did B&TB at a fairly well respected theatre, and at the first production meeting was told that there would be a chorus of 18 kids. I said, "So what are the kids for?", (meaning what scenes would they be added to). Without missing a beat, the producer says, "To sell tickets." Well duh.
I did a high school production of CATS last year. We had a cast size of 85, ranging from freshman to seniors. We were very lucky a lot of both good singers and dancers. The whole thing about little kids being in this show is not good at all. This is a show for people older than 14. The dance is too extensive for kids. Not to mention the show is vocally challenging. Good luck with your audition and those little kids.

It sure is. I had a great time DOING the show...but I had a better time making fun of the material while rehearsing :)
i know a production that had a small children's ensemble of little kittens
cats is such a hard show to put on artistically and financially, though...
