Cheers Mama,

Love your lowdown on your 'Norma', did not realise until reading this thread that Dianna Carroll played Norma,I knew she originally done the song a 'Perfect Year' which was released.

Glad you rated Glenn Close and Kathryn Evans, so highly, did you not see Betty Buckley?

Haha, questionable doesn't do the casting of Petula justice. A great performer and a true British legend for her work - but I fear that Sir Trevor and Lord Lloyd Webber must have been temporarily insane when casting her...especially to take over Elaine!!!

Can't wait to see Kathryn's Norma. Going down to London in March/April. Silly question, but I'm not intending to book tickets in advance - will there still be tickets available through TKTS or at the Box Office if I go on the day?

you sound almost as big a fan of Kathryn Evans as me! Isn't she just the best? Love her as Norma, but then I've loved everything she's ever done. I've only managed to see Sunset twice so far as I live 'oop north' but am planning as many visits as I can before it ends. I've met her a couple of times and she really is lovely. Why on earth isn't there a cast recording of this production?Don't suppose you know of any illicit recordings?

To susan3: sorry I'm new to this and not sure how to reply but this is for you - it sounds as if you love Kathryn as much as I do. I used to travel to Leicester from London whenever she was at the Haymarket and now I have to travel to London from Lancashire but she's worth it. I'd also love to see her at the stage door after a matinee. Do you fancy meeting up and giving it a go? Not so bad if there's 2 of us.

I saw Glen Close do this in NY and she was very good, but i went back only a few months later for a family members wedding and decided to see it again with Betty Buckley in the role and she blew me away. She was the perfect Norma, her intensity and that voice were just spot on.
The set was amazing as well, i loved the split scene when the whole set raised up and there was another set (apartment set) underneath, it was breathtaking.
The budget and running costs were so high though it was always going to loose money.
I cant remember what the actress/comedian was called who did the UK tour but she was very good too
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna

The wonderful Faith Brown as Norma.
re: Kathryn Evans- London's Fabulous 'Norma' AND other 'Normas' Revisited!

I love Faith Brown, she is a loverly lady who is one of the old school performers. I spent an hysterical 4 weeks with her on tour with her and her variety show in 1984. The show was fully rehearsed and staged with full orchestra the lot but every performance was different and we lived on our wits from curtain up till curtain down as to what she would do next!

This is one of the numbers she did on that tour- poor Kate Bush!

I saw the original production of Sunset and the Los Angeles version at the Aldephi, really regret not seeing Elaine Paige and going to New York and seeing Glenn Close.

So sad that Sunset is closing, a great score which is done with passion be the cast every performance at the comedy, with only a 5 month perhaps this might not go to New York?

re: Kathryn Evans- London's Fabulous 'Norma' AND other 'Normas' Revisited!

I went to see Sunset again this afternoon, on this winter breaking into spring day.

I am not fully convinced over the concept of actor/musician, but concede if it is away of bring back brilliant productions as this it is worth it.

Joe Gillis was played by an understudy today, only one problem though, he had a bald patch, please, Ben Goddard who normally plays the role stood out for me, when I saw it originally. Dave Willets and Kathryn Evans are both superb, we would not except anything less from these seasoned professionals. However same as first time I saw this, Laura Pitt-Pulford still stands out as Betty.

Pleased to report there is still a warm Sunset over Leicester Square.

I was also at yesterday's matinee of Sunset and was pleased to see all 4 levels open and a pretty healthy-looking house. Does this mean bookings have picked up? It was my 3rd visit and Kathryn was superb as ever. I was actually delighted to see the understudy playing Joe as I find Ben Goddard slightly irritating (just my opinion). Not quite sure why you would have a problem with his bald patch......where does it say that Joe should have a full head of hair?!

Like you I think Laura Pitt-Pulford is outstanding and I do think the actor/musician thing works although I loved the original staging and do miss the big orchestrations. Still, who cares how it's done as long as it's back in the West End.

Looking forward to my next visit in 2 weeks time.....does La Evans realise how much she's costing me?!

I'm so jealous that you spoke to Kathryn. I thought about going round to the stage door after the matinee yesterday but couldn't pluck up the courage. Did you have to wait long, and did she just come out or did you have to ask for her? I'm determined to do it next time.

I wonder if she's aware that they have extended the booking to 6 June for groups only. Obviously to test the water.
