re: re: re: Kelly Osbourne as Tracy Turnblad

bestofbroadway - There are plenty of people who would be much worse and/or simply miscast in the role. Patti LuPone, for instance, or Carol Channing. My friend Estee would be simply awful because she cannot act, sing, or dance. She works in real estate tax. Donna Murphy would simply not be an appropriate Tracy Turnblad. Or God forbid, Nathan Lane. Just because you didn't like her doesn't mean you can make some sort of authoritative blanket statement like that. It's immature and ignorant.

I also enjoyed Marissa. I saw Hairspray twice with the original cast. My friend saw Kathy Biers in it and felt she did not have the energy or funniness of Marisa. That was her opinion. I also dislike producers bringing in named talents just to sell tickets. Melanie was a perfect example in Chicago.....

People who can sing: Kerry Butler,Susan Egan,Kelly Clarkson,Idina Menzel,Celine Dion. Marissa was a good "actress" in Hairspray and I loved her in it. That is why she won the Tony, she was the perfect Tracy. I just don't think she has a great singing voice in comparison to any of those people or what I like to think of as good singing.

re: Kelly Osbourne as Tracy Turnblad

i hope you're joking. i don't want to see a no-talent like kelly osbourne starring in a Broadway musical just because she's famous.

Mister Matt- actually I think some of the people you named would be MUCH more interesting and give a little flavor to the show that right now has nothing going for it. As far as Marissa is concerned...I've seen more talent at preschool Christmas pageants. Lets look at exhibit one shall we-

-That trashy movie she was in recently on TV...Big Girl or Fat Girl or Overweight Girl or Untalented Girl... something like that.

I rest my case :)

Marissa was wonderful. End of story.

Jeez....I'm getting so tired of these manufactured celebrities..ala reality shows.

That's what rather horrifying about the ending of "Chicago." Two murders turning their notorioty into a career.

Not saying anything about Ms. Osbourne, but just because you are enjoying your fleeting moment of celebrity does not mean that you belong on a theatre stage.

There are no film editiors piecing together your performance there.

Still..it's rather sad that the general public will pay to see stunting casting like this at the expense of the production.

bestofbroadway - If you think the people I mentioned would work in the show then you not only missed my point, but you obviously know nothing about casting a role. I'm sorry you don't like Hairspray, but critiqueing a show and giving your opinion are two different things. To say Hairspray has "nothing going for it" is not only ignorant but ridiculous. Even if I hated the score and the book and everything about it, I could admit that one thing the show has "going for it" is success. It displays far more maturity than The Producers and more originality than Thoroughly Modern Millie. The book is stronger than Mamma Mia's. And personally, I find the score delightful and the design brilliant.

I didn't watch Marissa's show on TV and honestly, it has absolutely nothing to do with her performance in Hairspray. To use it as a comparison is like telling someone not to see Patti LuPone in Evita because you didn't like her character on Life Goes On.

If you're going to make a case, do so with some maturity and intelligence please. :)

Hahaha...your amusing Mister Matt. You have one thing right. The book is certainly better than Mamma Mia's. "Far more mature than Producers"- if your refering to the trashy one liners than yes it is far more mature. "More originality than TMM"- ???? They are both based on movies- neither is all that "original" if you ask my opinion.

Her performance in her TV movie is just an up close and personal look at her Tracy Turnblad character. They are EXACTLY the same. It not only showed that she had no range at all as an actress, but that she's not even good within the small range of roles that are given to her.

I'll try to be more "mature" from now on Mister Matty Matt Matt. Have fun watching your bubble gum garbaaage.

Bestofbroadway - In reference to Producers, I'm not talking just about the trashy one-liners (of which they are painfully abundant), but also about the theme of the show. I think the issues of self image and the Equal Rights Movement are far more admirable than two guys trying to swindle old ladies by offending the public with a flop Broadway musical. The Producers is sophomoric humor at best with the maturity of an SNL sketch and a completely forgettable score. Considering originality, the subject matter, staging, choreography, and score are much more original than TMM. Luckily I'm not a musical theatre snob who cannot appreciate the work and talent that goes into the pop shows as well as the more technically advanced structures of Sondheim, Brown, or LaChiusa.

I'll have fun watching the shows that please me. You have fun bashing whatever you need to make yourself feel superior. Don't let the other kids bully you on the playground.

Call me when you reach puberty.
