Ken Davenport / Wave Music

How the heck does Davenport keep getting jobs like this and executive producing for ALW? Are other producers not interested in these gigs? Or does he just do a really good job of selling himself and these people are clueless? I don't think he's ever had a show recoup, has he?

No he has not.

Think of him as the theatre version of Donald Trump.

As to why not other producers, "those who can, do; those who can get consulting jobs."

He's rich.

If you have enough money you too can get your name above the title!

You can buy a Tony Award too!

"Davenport, producer of the “Once on This Island” revival and “Gettin’ the Band Back Together,”..."

What a pair of very different shows. You want to list some of his other accomplishments instead? The off-Broadway play where virgins got in for free? The revival of Godspell funded through unaccredited investors?

Time'll run out soon enough; prime candidate for the Adela Holzer / Max Bialystock Memorial Wing at a prison near you.

He was a producer on Kinky Boots and Play That Goes Wrong which both recouped. But agreed that his track record is not great even though I’ve enjoyed some of the things he produced. He frankly just seems not smart for a producer.

Daryl Roth was the lead producer on Kinky Boots, and Kevin McCollum and JJ Abrams were lead producers on Play that Goes Wrong. Ken Davenport just put up money and bought himself a Tony Award.

and just to add, even though the usage is confusing and some producers tackily try to aggrandize their involvement, in this context, when one assesses a producer's track record, it means as a lead producer. No one cares how good someone is at making money for their own account.

It seems like Davenport's biggest (and only) success as a lead producer (critically and commercially) is the revival of Once on This Island.

I believe Once on This Island lost almost 100% of their capitalization? One of the problems many have with him is that when his company also executive producers, general manages and is the marketing director on a show, it's in his best interest to run a show into the ground, rather than close up show and return what's left to the investors, since he gets weekly fees for all of those other services. Even worse when he wrote the book and gets an author royalty too. Even on his flops, he makes money. Evil/brilliant I guess.
