I was talking with some friends yesterday commenting on how Ken Howard played Thomas Jefferson in both 1776 and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
We were trying to figure out if anyone else played the same character in two seperate musicals, especially Broadway musicals. Does anyone know of another instance, or does Ken Howard alone hold this distinction?
Chita Rivera played Rose in Bye Bye Birdie, and its sequel Bring Back Birdie.
Oh you beat me to it!

This may be irrelevant, but didn't Dorothy Loudon play Miss Hannigan in Annie and the same role in Annie Two (or whatever it was called) when it was in Washington or some tryout city? I'm pretty sure she never played it in NYC.
Carol Channing also played Lorelei in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Lorelei (the sequel).
I don't know any specifics, but I am sure that someone must've played the the phantom in both the ALW and the Kopit/Yeston versions.

Re Phantom:
Not on broadway, since Yeston's never played there.
If we are gonna cross mediums, Ed Herrmann played FDR in a TV miniseries, and in the movie of Annie.
Linda Emond played Abagail Adams in the 1776 revival and in a PBS special about the Declaration of Independence (Simon Russell Beale as John Adams, James "the beast" Barbour as Jefferson).

Ken Howard also played Garrett Boydston in Dynasty AND The Colbys.
Was LORELEI a sequel or just a revamped version of BLONDES?

Lorelei was a re-vamp to expand Carol's part.

Interesting though that it seems that Ken Howard is the only person to play the same role in 2 unrelated musicals. Pretty cool trivia. Thanks Whizzer.
Anne Nathan was an u/s for Emma Goldman in Ragtime, and played Emma Goldman in Assassins.
Ken Page has played the Lion in The Wiz on Broadway and Wizard of Oz at Madison Square Garden and national tour.
I'm sure there are other examples which I can't think of right now.
Wait until Phantom II. Maybe all the characters will be played by people from Phantom I, and that will blow this thread wide open!!
I am reminded of that guy who played Mr. Drucker on both "Petticoat Junction" and "Green Acres," simultaneously.
That's television, for all you young whippersnappers.
And yes, I know the difference between TV and Broadway, I'm just sayin' I am reminded!..........
Stephen Spinella won two Tony Awards for the "Angels In America" plays. He played the same character in both shows.
