"Is it just me or did CBS conveniently re-order Iztak Perlman and Ms. Burnett so that Ms. Burnett would be last and therefore "force" the viewers to watch to the very end. I found that to be very offensive considering it was very obvious that the presentations were just "going down the line" and then all of a sudden there was a jump to Mr. Perlman, leaving Carol for last."
They don't always "go down the line." I'm sure I remember that in other years the order is staggered, sometimes starting with the person in the middle, and alternating left and right, or right and left and so on.
"was there a gay men's chorus behind someone singing during the Nichols segment that went unbilled?"
There is a Gay Mens Chorus in Washington, so it's possible it was them. However, it is also possible that the men were from the choral group that is usually on the stage for these kinds of events -- Choral Arts Society, directed by Norman Scribner.
It was lovely to hear Ms. Andrews singing again.

Julie last sang in a concert type thing last December for the tour of A Royal Christmas. It was mostly talk-singing though, but the concert I went to, she had family there because I saw them in the audience, so I think she tried to sing a little more... (I heard a recording of a show in another city and compared the two) She sang "I Saw Three Ships" all by herself at that concert... (It was spectacular)
She did some "nanny" type singing in Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime.. It wasn't pretty though cause to me it sounded like nanny singing and not julie.. which is what i think was meant to be..
At the Kennedy Center Honors, it was absolutely beautiful to hear her sing just those few bars even... I wish she had gotten to sing the rest by herself and not have Bernadette jump in with her, but they are friends and bernadette has a nice voice so it was ok....
But after hearing more info on Larry King last night, she said that part of her vocal cords had been removed during the surgery.. So to not have part of her vocal cords and still be able to sing like she did at the KCH was just amazing...
She could pass as a jazz singer if she wanted too i think...

Posted: 12/28/03 at 1:31pmRay: I didn't know she'd done any of those things, and I missed the King show (a rare one with no participation of Laci Peterson/Kobe Bryant case hangers-on, or the perpetually outraged Jackson family). I had no idea part of a chord was removed. I just thought her damage was scar tissue. Layman's question: So she can still sing, but just not the upper register? I have noticed that her speaking voice has mostly lost its post-op huskiness, so maybe some of the healing will allow her to at least remain musical. She spoke with more classic Andrews lilt at the honors.

She has mostly said in interviews that it was scar tissue.( the result of hitting high notes 8 times a week and the buildup of the muscles (i think) becoming harder that got to be uncomfortable... It wasn't until on the larry king interview that it finally came out that part of her vocal chord had been removed...
I am not sure that she did one of those rodger music specials.. were they on PBS? it could have been a past performance that they used for the special.

Posted: 12/29/03 at 12:21pmI thought that Vicki Lawrence's absense was odd as well. Almost as strange as Phillip Seymour Hoffman's presence in the Mike Nichols segment. Any reason that he came out onstage not to do anything? Everyone else in that line up had something to say or sing or both.

It was actually Julie that jumped in on Bernadette, since Bernadette was the one who came out and started the song by herself. I thought it was so great that Julie joined in, but I was kind of hoping Bernadette would have sung more (longer) by herself and then have Julie and the the others join in.

Posted: 12/29/03 at 4:37pmAlso, Meryl Streep seemed in good voice. Much better and stronger than when she sang in "Postcards" which was a bit weak. Could she be one of the stars supposedly clammoring to do a musical...

Posted: 12/30/03 at 1:53pmI was in awe of how wonderful Meryl sounded; and she looked great too. I would love to see her in a musical. Also, Christine Baranski was sounding particularly lovely. She has such a beautiful singing voice. :)

Yea, it was strange to see ARC not go on this year.. I guess without Julie Andrews' star power it didnt get off the ground. Those who participated on the shows website message board were upset too..
And they cancelled with no explanation...Humph...
